JLPT N4 Kanji Flashcards: 170 Next-Step Characters, Readings & Words

Study 170 independently selected post-N5 kanji through word recognition, contextual spelling, and reading or usage distinctions.

Über dieses Lernkartenset

The JLPT describes N4 readers as able to understand passages on familiar daily topics written with basic vocabulary and kanji. It does not publish a fixed kanji or vocabulary list, so these 170 characters are an independent next-step selection—not an official, complete, exhaustive, or guaranteed exam list.

What the cards practice

  • Kanji in a word → core idea, reading, and meaning: 170 recognition cards each focus on one new primary character and one useful word.
  • Kana plus English context → kanji word: 170 spelling cards reverse those exact word mappings. The context fixes the intended word; the cards do not grade handwriting or stroke order.
  • Reading, usage, and visual distinctions: 60 selective cards separate look-alike characters, homophones, transitive and intransitive verbs, contrast pairs, seasons, family terms, and two useful word-specific readings.

The primary set excludes all 80 characters introduced by the live N5 deck. It also excludes kana instruction, audio, stroke order, handwriting assessment, full on'yomi and kun'yomi inventories, sentence grammar, reading passages, and mechanical permutations beyond the exact mappings above. The independent 170-character ledger starts from KANJIDIC2's historical pre-2010 level-3 field, then omits 11 lower-priority candidates to keep the scope practical. That field is a selection aid, not a current official JLPT syllabus.

The order introduces each recognition card before its reverse spelling card, keeps at least three unrelated cards between paired directions, and interleaves topics rather than turning the deck into one long block of near-duplicates. Distinction cards follow the primary pipeline only after all supporting words have been introduced, and a deterministic stride keeps paired distinction prompts apart. The review scheduler handles longer-term spacing after installation.

Task shape was checked against the official N4 purposes of test items, test-section guide, and JLPT FAQ. The official materials identify kanji reading, kana-to-kanji orthography, contextual meaning, paraphrase, and usage as N4 vocabulary tasks, while explicitly declining to publish a fixed list.

Readings and written-word mappings were checked against the EDRDG KANJIDIC project and JMdict project. This publication uses those dictionary files under CC BY-SA 4.0 and acknowledges the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group; it does not reproduce their gloss wording. Japanese-language facts remain facts rather than claimed original expression.

The prompts, explanations, selection, ordering, metadata, and generated cover are original to Flashcards Open Source App and are shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. This is an independent, unofficial educational deck. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the Japan Foundation, Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, or the JLPT organizers. No JLPT examination questions, answers, mark schemes, protected source prose, commercial deck text, logos, or trade dress were copied.
