JLPT N5 Kanji Flashcards: 80 Beginner Characters, Readings & Words

Learn 80 independently selected beginner kanji through meanings, priority readings, common words, and selective reverse recall.

Über dieses Lernkartenset

The JLPT describes N5 readers as able to understand some basic Japanese written with hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. It does not publish a fixed kanji or vocabulary syllabus, so these 80 characters form a focused study set—not an official, complete, exhaustive, or guaranteed exam list.

What the cards practice

  • Kanji → meaning and one priority reading: all 80 characters map to a concise core meaning plus one reading shown in a common word.
  • Meaning or word cue → kanji: 40 selective reverse cards cover numbers, time, position, directions, and high-use verbs where active recall has one clear target.

The deck excludes kana instruction, stroke order, handwriting scoring, audio, full on’yomi and kun’yomi inventories, rare meanings, sentence grammar, and mechanical reversals of all 80 characters. Learn hiragana and katakana first so the kanji word cues stay useful.

The sequence opens with interleaved numbers, calendar and clock anchors, and familiar everyday characters. It then widens into people, school language, position and direction, core verbs, and descriptive or environmental kanji while preserving simple-to-complex progress inside each topic. A production cue appears only after its recognition prerequisite. Related directions, repeated word anchors, and confusable pairs have at least three unrelated cards between them. The review scheduler handles continued spacing after installation.

Scope and task design were checked against the official JLPT FAQ, N5 purposes of test items, and N1–N5 level summary.

The character selection, prompts, answers, mappings, and order were independently authored for Flashcards Open Source App. This is an unofficial educational deck and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the Japan Foundation, Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, or the JLPT organizers. No protected JLPT examination questions, mark schemes, source prose, commercial deck text, or competitor card text was copied.

The CC0 label applies to the original prompts, answers, organization, and metadata to the extent applicable rights exist. It does not claim ownership of Japanese-language facts, the JLPT name, or third-party source material.
