Music Interval Flashcards: Size, Quality & Note Spelling
Installable practice for interval names, semitone counts, inversions, identification, and spelling-aware construction in written music theory.
Über dieses Lernkartenset
Written intervals get slippery when letter count, semitone distance, and spelling point in different directions. This 181-card deck turns those compact rules into retrieval practice for simple intervals from P1 through P8 in common Western written music theory and 12-tone equal temperament.
The sequence starts with size and quality families, abbreviations, and the conventional semitone chart. It then covers inversion pairs before moving into 48 note-pair identification prompts and 48 construction prompts. Cards practice interval name → semitone count, conventional semitone count → interval name, written notes → size and quality, and named interval + starting note → one correctly spelled upper note. Selected enharmonic contrasts show why equal semitone spans can carry different written names.
Reverse semitone cards use the conventional perfect/major/minor chart plus both tritone spellings. Other augmented and diminished enharmonic names appear only in selected contrast cards, not as an exhaustive reverse mapping. There is no audio, ear training, staff notation, compound intervals, exhaustive transposition grid, every enharmonic permutation, or course-specific grading.
The facts are common-knowledge music fundamentals checked against open educational references. CC0 applies to the original card wording, selection, ordering, metadata, and generated cover to the extent those elements carry rights; no ownership is claimed over musical facts.
This is an independent fundamentals deck. It supports written practice rather than replacing notation exercises, ear training, a course, teacher guidance, or a particular exam syllabus.

Frage
In written music theory, what is an interval?
Antwort
The distance between two pitches. A written interval is named by its number and quality.
Karte 2
Frage
How does a major interval compare with the minor interval of the same number?
Antwort
A major interval is one semitone wider. The written interval number stays the same.
Karte 3
Frage
How do you find an interval number from two written note names?
Antwort
Count letter names inclusively from the lower note to the upper note. C–E counts C, D, E, so it is a third.
Karte 4
Frage
What quality results when a major or perfect interval widens by one semitone without changing its number?
Antwort
Augmented. For example, widening C–F from P4 to C–F♯ produces A4.
Karte 5
Frage
Which interval numbers belong to the perfect family?
Antwort
Unisons, fourths, fifths, and octaves: 1, 4, 5, and 8.
Karte 6
Frage
What two parts make a specific written interval name?
Antwort
Quality and number. For example, “major third” combines the quality major with the number third.
Karte 7
Frage
How does a minor interval compare with the major interval of the same number?
Antwort
A minor interval is one semitone narrower. The written interval number stays the same.
Karte 8
Frage
Do accidentals change an interval's generic number?
Antwort
No. The written letter names set the number; accidentals can change the quality.
Karte 9
Frage
What quality results when a minor or perfect interval narrows by one semitone without changing its number?
Antwort
Diminished. For example, narrowing C–G from P5 to C–G♭ produces d5.
Karte 10
Frage
Which interval numbers belong to the major/minor family?
Antwort
Seconds, thirds, sixths, and sevenths: 2, 3, 6, and 7.
Karte 11
Frage
Which comes first when naming an interval: quality or number?
Antwort
Quality comes first. Say “minor third,” not “third minor.”
Karte 12
