Does Quizlet Have a Public API in 2026? Current Status and Safe Alternatives

As of August 18, 2026, Quizlet does not document a self-service public developer API or a public developer portal. An independent developer has no current official route to register an app, get a Quizlet API key, and use documented endpoints to read or write flashcard data.

That is a finding about Quizlet's public documentation, not a claim about its internal systems. Quizlet clearly has product and partner integrations. Its ChatGPT app and Google Classroom add-on are two current examples. Neither one opens a general-purpose Quizlet developer API to other applications.

If you searched “does Quizlet have an API?” because you want to automate Quizlet itself, the current practical answer is no public, self-service API is documented.

Several official features can look API-adjacent from the outside. They solve narrower jobs:

The useful distinction is simple: copying your own card text once is an export job. Showing Quizlet on another page is an embed job. A named integration works only inside that product flow. Software that repeatedly creates, reads, and edits cards needs a documented read/write API.

Export, embed, and partner access are not public APIs

A public API gives outside developers a contract: documentation, authentication, supported operations, usage rules, and a way to obtain credentials. None of Quizlet's current public surfaces provides that complete self-service path.

Quizlet's export is a manual transfer. The creator of a set can use the website to arrange its terms and definitions, select Copy text, and paste the result elsewhere. Quizlet says image exports are unavailable, copied sets cannot be exported, and the feature is website-only. This works for a careful one-time migration. It does not let software keep two systems synchronized.

An embed is presentation, not data access. Quizlet lets you copy HTML for a public set in Match, Learn, Test, Flashcards, or Spell mode. The embedded activity keeps the Quizlet logo, and learners interact with Quizlet's interface. Your application does not receive the set as card records it can edit.

A named integration has its own agreed product path. Quizlet can work with ChatGPT or Google Classroom without offering the same interface to every developer. Those launches prove that the named integrations exist; they do not prove that a Quizlet public API exists behind them for general use.

This is also why an old wrapper or a request visible in browser developer tools is not a supported Quizlet API. Public documentation and a stable developer contract are the missing pieces.

Choose the route that matches the job

For a one-off backup or migration, use export

Use Quizlet's official export flow for a set you created. Because the flow ends with Copy text, keep the first pasted copy unchanged before cleaning separators or mapping fields. You are preserving terms and definitions, not downloading a restorable deck package. Images and study history stay behind.

Export is the right shape for a finite move. It is the wrong shape for daily creation, synchronization, or repeated edits from software.

For presentation, use the official embed

If learners should study a public Quizlet set from a class site or LMS page, use the embed code Quizlet provides on its website. Choose the activity, select Copy HTML, and add the result to the page. Learners get an interactive Quizlet activity; the host site gets no raw card feed.

This is often all a teacher needs. Calling it an API only makes the requirement sound more complicated than it is.

For ChatGPT or Google Classroom, use the named integration

Quizlet's March 10, 2026 ChatGPT announcement describes a specific flow: connect the Quizlet app, start a prompt with @Quizlet, preview the generated set in ChatGPT, then open it in Quizlet to personalize and study. It is a supported way to create a Quizlet set from that conversation. It does not issue a reusable Quizlet API credential to your bot, script, or website.

Quizlet's June 30, 2026 Google Classroom announcement is similarly specific. The add-on lets educators find and assign activities, including practice questions, flashcards, and games, then track engagement and progress in the Classroom workflow. Quizlet says it requires Google Workspace for Education Plus; educators may need their IT administrator to grant permission or provide the add-on.

If either named workflow already matches your goal, use it. If you need a custom application, neither integration substitutes for public developer access.

For recurring automation, choose a documented read/write interface

Ongoing automation means your software must do the same work reliably more than once: create cards from notes, list decks, update answers, or manage a workspace over time. A clipboard export cannot provide that contract.

The safe route is a flashcard system that explicitly publishes how outside software authenticates and which reads and writes it supports. That may mean choosing a Quizlet API alternative for the automated workflow, while keeping Quizlet for the study tasks its public product supports.

What the Flashcards API alternative actually provides

Flashcards Open Source App publishes two routes to the same limited, per-user data surface:

  • The external Agent API starts at GET https://api.flashcards-open-source-app.com/v1/. Its discovery response guides an agent through email OTP login, API-key creation, and workspace selection. Reads use a SQL-style query route; writes use a separate execute route.
  • The remote MCP server is available at https://mcp.flashcards-open-source-app.com/mcp. MCP clients get three tools: list_workspaces, sql_query, and sql_execute.

Both routes are workspace-scoped. The published resources are workspace, cards, decks, and review_events, and results are capped at 100 rows per statement. The SQL-style interface is a limited dialect, not raw PostgreSQL. There is no OpenAPI schema, so workflows that depend on generated OpenAPI clients will need a different interface.

This can help a developer or AI agent automate flashcards they own. It cannot read a Quizlet URL, mirror a Quizlet account, or act as an undocumented Quizlet client. There is no automatic Quizlet importer. For a migration, export the terms and definitions from your own set first, review the text, and then map it into the destination's card fields. The destination creates its own study state; Quizlet history does not come across.

Private browser requests are not a safe shortcut

Quizlet's web interface makes network requests, as every modern web application does. Finding one of those requests does not turn it into a supported endpoint for your program.

Private browser endpoints may depend on session cookies, internal formats, anti-abuse controls, and assumptions tied to the current interface. They can change without public versioning or migration guidance. More directly, Quizlet's Terms of Service, last updated May 28, 2026, prohibit scraping and other automated extraction, as well as unauthorized automated use of the service.

That is a fragile and risky foundation for a personal script, let alone a product. I will not provide guessed endpoints or reverse-engineering steps here.

For your own set, export when you need a one-time move. Embed a public set when learners need it on another page. Use the named ChatGPT or Google Classroom integration for those exact workflows. For recurring reads and writes, choose software that documents the automation contract—or keep the Quizlet part manual until Quizlet publishes one.

How to tell if the status changes

Quizlet could launch a developer program after this article's facts-checked date. The signal to look for is an official developer portal or documentation explaining who can register, how authentication works, which card operations are supported, and what usage rules apply.

Another third-party wrapper would not change the answer. Neither would a new named partnership. Until Quizlet documents self-service developer access, treat claims about a current Quizlet API carefully and pick the supported route that matches the actual job.
