AP US History Flashcards: Complete APUSH 9-Period Review

Review the full fall-2026 AP U.S. History framework with 520 original question-and-answer cards across all nine periods. The deck practices chronology, evidence, causation, comparison, continuity and change, and links among the course themes.

What you will practice

  • Connect events, people, policies, movements, and institutions to their historical significance.
  • Recall causes, consequences, responses, and changes over time.
  • Compare competing ideas, regional systems, reform strategies, political coalitions, and foreign-policy choices.
  • Use theme links and selected outside evidence to place developments in context.

Recall map and exclusions

The cards practice event or policy to significance, cause to development or outcome, development to consequence or response, selected comparison and contrast, continuity and change, and theme or outside-evidence links. Reverse prompts appear only when they create a useful and unambiguous retrieval task. The deck excludes mechanical reversals, exhaustive date catalogs, quotation completion, released or secure exam material, answer-option elimination, and imitation DBQ, SAQ, or LEQ prompts.

Learning sequence

Cards progress through Periods 1–9. Each period introduces prerequisites and chronology before dependent ideas, then separates genuinely confusing variants with unrelated retrievals. The order supports a first pass through the course while leaving long-term spacing to the review scheduler.

Sources, originality, and license

Framework scope follows the College Board AP U.S. History course and exam description effective fall 2026. Historical facts were independently checked against government, public-domain, or explicitly compatible sources recorded in the review ledger.

Every prompt, answer, explanation, mapping choice, and sequence is independently authored. No College Board question, sample item, scoring guide, course-description prose, textbook passage, commercial-deck card, proprietary study guide, leaked material, logo, badge, or trade dress was copied or adapted. The CC0 label applies to the original expression, organization, metadata, and generated cover to the extent applicable rights exist; it does not claim ownership of facts, names, marks, government works, or third-party material.

Independent study aid

This is an unofficial study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or official material from College Board or the AP Program. AP and APUSH are used only to identify the course and exam the cards support.

  1. Карточка 1

    Вопрос

What broad pattern defined Native North America around 1491?

    Ответ

Many distinct societies adapted to different environments. Native nations built their own political, economic, and cultural systems; they weren't one uniform culture waiting for European contact.

  2. Карточка 2

    Вопрос

What drove European exploration of the Americas in the late fifteenth century?

    Ответ

Competition for wealth, trade routes, imperial power, and Christian converts. European rulers and merchants backed Atlantic ventures to gain advantages over their rivals.

  3. Карточка 3

    Вопрос

Why is Columbus's 1492 voyage a major turning point in Atlantic history?

    Ответ

It began sustained contact between Europe and the Americas. That contact accelerated conquest, migration, ecological exchange, and the creation of an Atlantic world.

  4. Карточка 4

    Вопрос

How did maritime technology support sustained Atlantic voyages?

    Ответ

Improved ships, sails, maps, and navigational instruments made long ocean crossings more practical. Caravels combined maneuverability with cargo capacity, while the compass and better charts helped crews hold a course.

  5. Карточка 5

    Вопрос

How did Native peoples in the Southwest adapt to an arid environment?

    Ответ

They used irrigation, drought-resistant crops, and compact settlements. Pueblo communities grew maize and other crops while building durable adobe and stone villages.

  6. Карточка 6

    Вопрос

Why did relatively small Spanish forces defeat large American empires?

    Ответ

Disease, steel weapons, political divisions, and Native allies magnified Spanish power. Conquest wasn't a simple contest between Europeans and a united Native population.

  7. Карточка 7

    Вопрос

    What was the Columbian Exchange?

    Ответ

The Atlantic transfer of plants, animals, diseases, people, and ideas after 1492. It reshaped environments, diets, populations, and labor systems on both sides of the ocean.

  8. Карточка 8

    Вопрос

How did joint-stock companies change Atlantic ventures?

    Ответ

They let many investors pool capital and share risk. That financing model supported costly trade and colonization projects such as the Virginia Company, chartered in 1606.

  9. Карточка 9

    Вопрос

Why were many pre-contact communities in the Great Basin and western Plains mobile?

    Ответ

Dry conditions and scattered resources favored seasonal movement. Groups adjusted hunting and gathering patterns to water, plants, and game; widespread horse culture developed later, after European contact.

  10. Карточка 10

    Вопрос

What economic work did the encomienda system compel Native people to perform?

    Ответ

It extracted Native tribute and labor for plantation agriculture, mining, and other resource production. Encomenderos were supposed to provide protection and Christian instruction; in practice, the grant concentrated coercive power and exploitation.

  11. Карточка 11

    Вопрос

What caused the steepest Native population losses after European contact?

    Ответ

Epidemics of Old World diseases, especially smallpox. Communities had little prior exposure, and warfare, displacement, and food disruption made the demographic collapse worse.

  12. Карточка 12

    Вопрос

How did European and Native ideas about land often differ?

    Ответ

Europeans often emphasized exclusive ownership, while many Native communities emphasized layered use and collective obligations. Those differences fed disputes, though neither side held a single universal view.

  13. Карточка 13

    Вопрос

How did agriculture shape Native societies in the Northeast, Mississippi Valley, and Atlantic seaboard?

    Ответ

Mixed farming, hunting, and gathering supported permanent villages and larger political networks. Maize, beans, and squash supplied dependable food alongside regional trade and wild resources.

  14. Карточка 14

    Вопрос

What did the Spanish colonial caste system rank?

    Ответ

It ranked people by ancestry and birthplace. Peninsulares and creoles generally held more power than mixed-race, Native, and African people, though lived identities were more complicated than the labels.

  15. Карточка 15

    Вопрос

How did Old World animals change life in the Americas?

    Ответ

Horses, cattle, pigs, and other livestock changed transport, hunting, farming, and land use. Their effects varied by region and unfolded over generations.

  16. Карточка 16

    Вопрос

How did Native nations exercise agency during early European contact?

    Ответ

They traded, negotiated, formed alliances, relocated, adapted, and resisted. Native peoples pursued their own interests rather than responding to Europeans in one uniform way.

  17. Карточка 17

    Вопрос

What supported large, permanent Native communities in the Pacific Northwest?

    Ответ

Abundant salmon and forest resources. Reliable food and cedar supported settled villages, regional trade, and socially complex communities without dependence on intensive farming.

  18. Карточка 18

    Вопрос

What was the main purpose of Spain's mission system in Period 1?

    Ответ

To convert Native peoples while extending Spanish control over contested frontiers. Missions also organized settlement and labor, making them sites of exchange, coercion, adaptation, and resistance.

  19. Карточка 19

    Вопрос

How did American crops affect the wider world after 1492?

    Ответ

Crops such as maize and potatoes improved diets and supported population growth abroad. Their spread made the Columbian Exchange a global demographic change, not just an American one.

  20. Карточка 20

    Вопрос

How did family and gender systems cause misunderstanding after contact?

    Ответ

European patriarchal norms could misread Native systems that traced kinship, property, or leadership through women. In Haudenosaunee communities, children belonged to the mother's clan, and clan mothers selected and advised male leaders; neither European nor Native societies followed one universal model.

  21. Карточка 21

    Вопрос

What social changes could follow when Native communities developed dependable food surpluses?

    Ответ

More permanent settlements could support specialized work, wider trade, and larger political networks. As intensive farming spread north from present-day Mexico, reliable harvests helped communities sustain craft production and more complex centers of authority.

  22. Карточка 22

    Вопрос

Why did coerced African labor expand in the early Spanish Atlantic?

    Ответ

Colonial labor demand joined Atlantic trafficking networks that forcibly supplied workers for plantations and mines. European traders partnered with some West African rulers and merchants, then transported enslaved people across the ocean under brutal conditions.

  23. Карточка 23

    Вопрос

What made St. Augustine, founded in 1565, historically significant?

    Ответ

It became Spain's enduring Florida base and the oldest continuously occupied European-founded settlement in the continental United States. Its fort guarded Atlantic shipping and helped Spain counter French and English claims.

  24. Карточка 24

    Вопрос

Why did conversion efforts in Spanish missions provoke both adaptation and resistance?

    Ответ

Missionaries tied Christianity to colonial control, while Native communities defended or adapted their own spiritual traditions. Some people blended selected beliefs, but forced conversion and attacks on sacred practices also produced resistance.

  25. Карточка 25

    Вопрос

How did Native peoples in present-day California use varied environments before European settlement?

    Ответ

Many communities paired established villages with seasonal harvesting, hunting, and fishing. Coastal Chumash people built large villages and a maritime trade economy, while Coast Miwok groups moved between permanent villages and temporary resource sites; seasonal travel didn't make either society wholly mobile.

  26. Карточка 26

    Вопрос

How did Bartolomé de las Casas influence debates over Spanish colonization?

    Ответ

He condemned the mistreatment of Native people and pressed the crown for reform. His advocacy exposed abuses, although colonial coercion continued and he initially accepted African labor before later rejecting slavery.

  27. Карточка 27

    Вопрос

How did American silver affect Europe's economy after conquest began?

    Ответ

It financed Spanish imperial spending, enlarged Europe's money supply, and intensified long-distance trade. The influx also contributed to sixteenth-century inflation, so bullion brought both commercial expansion and economic strain.

  28. Карточка 28

    Вопрос

How did Native peoples defend sovereignty as European demands grew?

    Ответ

They used diplomatic negotiation, strategic alliances, and military resistance to protect land, labor, belief, and political authority. The Tiguex War of 1540–1541 is one example of Pueblo communities fighting the demands and violence of a Spanish expedition.

  29. Карточка 29

    Вопрос

What did the failed Roanoke colony show about early English colonization?

    Ответ

Permanent settlement was uncertain and depended on supplies, leadership, food, and Native relations. Delayed resupply and worsening conflict left England's late-sixteenth-century colonial plans fragile.

  30. Карточка 30

    Вопрос

Where did Spain establish mission footholds in the present-day United States before 1607?

    Ответ

In Florida after 1565 and New Mexico after 1598. California's first Spanish mission was founded in 1769, so the California mission network belongs to Period 3 rather than Period 1.

  31. Карточка 31

    Вопрос

How did European arguments about the treatment of non-Europeans develop during colonization?

    Ответ

Some leaders challenged colonial brutality, while others used religious, cultural, and increasingly racial claims to defend conquest and forced labor. The Valladolid debate set Las Casas's reform case against Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda's defense of Spanish domination.

  32. Карточка 32

    Вопрос

How did Europeans and Native peoples adapt to one another during early contact?

    Ответ

They selectively adopted useful knowledge, goods, and practices even amid conflict and misunderstanding. Europeans relied on Native foodways and geographic knowledge, while Native communities incorporated items such as metal tools into their own systems.

  33. Карточка 33

    Вопрос

How did Spanish, French, and English colonial projects differ by 1607?

    Ответ

Spain emphasized conquest and extraction, France tied colonization to commercial monopolies and trade, and England organized ventures aimed at permanent settlement. All three pursued wealth and strategic advantage, but they committed people and power in different ways.

  34. Карточка 34

    Вопрос

Why could defending Native sovereignty include protecting women's authority?

    Ответ

In some Native nations, women's roles in lineage, property, or leadership were part of the political and social order. Negotiation, alliances, relocation, and armed resistance could therefore protect community authority against colonizers' patriarchal rules as well as defend land and belief.

  35. Карточка 35

    Вопрос

What best explains the sweeping changes in the Americas from 1491 to 1607?

    Ответ

Sustained Atlantic contact joined ecological exchange to imperial conquest and Native responses. Disease caused the sharpest demographic shock, while trade, migration, warfare, and adaptation remade societies.

  36. Карточка 36

    Вопрос

Why is Jamestown's founding in 1607 a turning point?

    Ответ

It established England's first permanent colony in North America. Its survival opened the Chesapeake to sustained English settlement, tobacco production, and expanding conflict with the Powhatan peoples.

  37. Карточка 37

    Вопрос

What was the First Great Awakening's main effect on colonial society?

    Ответ

Revival preaching challenged established religious authority and stressed personal conversion. Traveling ministers and shared debates also gave colonists a rare common experience across regions.

  38. Карточка 38

    Вопрос

What did the Stono Rebellion of 1739 reveal about colonial slavery?

    Ответ

Enslaved people actively resisted bondage. The South Carolina uprising sought freedom in Spanish Florida and prompted harsher restrictions, showing both African agency and planter fear.

  39. Карточка 39

    Вопрос

Why did English colonization create a larger settler footprint than French or Dutch colonization?

    Ответ

Farms and family settlement drew far more European migrants and claimed far more territory. Many came for land, material opportunity, or religious goals, then formed predominantly European communities that displaced Native residents instead of depending mainly on Native-centered trade networks.

  40. Карточка 40

    Вопрос

How did Enlightenment thought influence British North America?

    Ответ

It encouraged reason, natural rights, and confidence that people could study and improve society. These ideas later supplied colonists with language for criticizing arbitrary power.

  41. Карточка 41

    Вопрос

How did sustained European trade change Native communities during Period 2?

    Ответ

It brought useful goods but also dependency, shifts in warfare, and renewed epidemic loss. Metal tools, firearms, and horses changed work and conflict unevenly; Native nations adopted what served their goals rather than responding as one group.

  42. Карточка 42

    Вопрос

What was the basic logic of British mercantilism?

    Ответ

Colonial trade should increase the empire's wealth and power. Colonies supplied raw materials, bought British goods, and operated within rules meant to favor the mother country.

  43. Карточка 43

    Вопрос

How did tobacco reshape the Chesapeake and North Carolina?

    Ответ

It made these colonies profitable while driving demand for land and labor. Tobacco expansion first drew many indentured servants and later relied increasingly on enslaved African labor, while plantation growth put more pressure on Native lands.

  44. Карточка 44

    Вопрос

Which two dissenters exposed the limits of Puritan conformity in Massachusetts?

    Ответ

Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson. Authorities banished both; Williams founded Rhode Island on religious liberty, while Hutchinson challenged clerical authority and the accepted gender roles of the time.

  45. Карточка 45

    Вопрос

How did French colonization in North America differ from English settler expansion?

    Ответ

France relied more on fur trade, missions, and alliances with Native nations. Its smaller settler population and inland trade network made Native partnerships especially important.

  46. Карточка 46

    Вопрос

How did enslaved people resist bondage without open rebellion?

    Ответ

They used everyday acts that limited enslavers' control. Work slowdowns, feigned illness, tool breaking, taking food, and temporary or permanent escape asserted agency when organized revolt was too dangerous.

  47. Карточка 47

    Вопрос

What caused King Philip's War in New England?

    Ответ

English expansion and mounting pressure on Native sovereignty. The brutal 1675–1676 conflict devastated both sides and sharply weakened Native power in southern New England.

  48. Карточка 48

    Вопрос

What did Virginia's House of Burgesses establish in 1619?

    Ответ

An early representative assembly in English America. Property-holding colonists gained a role in local lawmaking even while the governor and crown retained authority; wealthy planters often dominated that representation.

  49. Карточка 49

    Вопрос

How did expanding print and consumer culture connect eighteenth-century colonists?

    Ответ

Shared newspapers, pamphlets, and imported goods linked distant colonies to one another and to Britain. The same networks later carried political arguments and organized resistance.

  50. Карточка 50

    Вопрос

What was the colonial headright system designed to encourage?

    Ответ

Immigration and labor recruitment. Colonies granted land for paying a migrant's passage, helping wealthy Chesapeake planters accumulate acreage and bring in indentured workers.

  51. Карточка 51

    Вопрос

Why was the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 significant?

    Ответ

Pueblo peoples coordinated a successful revolt that drove the Spanish from New Mexico for twelve years. When Spain returned, officials tolerated more Pueblo religious practice and worked through some Native leaders while colonial coercion continued.

  52. Карточка 52

    Вопрос

Why did intermarriage matter to French and Dutch colonization?

    Ответ

It turned commercial ties into family and diplomatic relationships. Native women and their relatives supplied local knowledge, processing skills, and access to trade networks; French and Dutch colonists depended on these connections because their settler populations were small.

  53. Карточка 53

    Вопрос

How did colonial slave codes make slavery hereditary and racial?

    Ответ

They tied enslaved status to African ancestry and made a child's condition follow the mother. These laws stripped rights and turned lifetime bondage into an inheritable system.

  54. Карточка 54

    Вопрос

What did the Navigation Acts try to control?

    Ответ

They directed colonial shipping and key exports through English ships and markets. Enforcement varied, and colonists often evaded the rules through smuggling.

  55. Карточка 55

    Вопрос

What principle did the Mayflower Compact express in 1620?

    Ответ

Settlers would form a civil government and obey laws made for the common good. It was a local self-government agreement, not a declaration of independence or religious freedom.

  56. Карточка 56

    Вопрос

    What was the Middle Passage?

    Ответ

The forced Atlantic voyage that carried enslaved Africans to the Americas. Captives faced confinement, violence, disease, and high mortality within the larger transatlantic slave trade.

  57. Карточка 57

    Вопрос

How did Native nations use rivalry among European empires?

    Ответ

They chose trade and military partners according to their own political and territorial interests. Playing rivals against one another could protect access to goods or land, although epidemics and expanding settlements steadily reduced that leverage.

  58. Карточка 58

    Вопрос

What was New Netherland's main colonial strength before England seized it?

    Ответ

Its Hudson River position anchored a profitable fur-trading colony. New Amsterdam connected inland Native trade to Atlantic shipping and drew a varied population before England took New Netherland in 1664.

  59. Карточка 59

    Вопрос

How did indentured servitude supply labor to the early Chesapeake?

    Ответ

Migrants traded several years of work for passage and eventual freedom dues. The system supplied many workers before planters relied more heavily on racial, hereditary slavery.

  60. Карточка 60

    Вопрос

How did enslaved Africans and their descendants preserve community under colonial slavery?

    Ответ

They rebuilt family and kin networks and carried religious, musical, oral, and craft traditions into new communities. Forced separation changed those traditions, but enslaved people combined African inheritances with knowledge and practices developed in the Americas.

  61. Карточка 61

    Вопрос

What distinguished the Middle Colonies from New England and the Chesapeake?

    Ответ

Greater ethnic and religious diversity joined fertile grain lands and busy ports. Family farms, commerce, and cities such as New York and Philadelphia produced a mixed regional economy.

  62. Карточка 62

    Вопрос

How did salutary neglect shape Britain's mainland colonies?

    Ответ

Loose imperial enforcement let colonists practice substantial self-government and trade flexibility. Those habits later made tighter British control feel like a sharp break.

  63. Карточка 63

    Вопрос

What economic system dominated the Lower South by the early eighteenth century?

    Ответ

Large rice and indigo plantations worked by enslaved Africans. South Carolina's links to Barbados helped produce a wealthy planter elite and an enslaved Black majority.

  64. Карточка 64

    Вопрос

What was the Puritan Great Migration of the 1630s?

    Ответ

The movement of thousands of English Puritans to New England. Many arrived as families, helping produce stable towns and a more balanced population than in the early Chesapeake.

  65. Карточка 65

    Вопрос

How did the Atlantic trading system connect Britain's mainland colonies to a wider economy?

    Ответ

It moved colonial staples, manufactured goods, credit, and enslaved people among the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Actual routes formed a web rather than one neat triangular circuit.

  66. Карточка 66

    Вопрос

Why did Spain fail to impose uniform control across its North American borderlands?

    Ответ

Native resistance and local conditions limited colonial authority. Spain used missions, presidios, and settlements to press territorial and religious claims, but Native communities could resist, flee, negotiate, or form alliances, forcing colonial rule to vary from place to place.

  67. Карточка 67

    Вопрос

How did enslaved and free Africans become part of Spanish colonial society in North America?

    Ответ

They worked in settlements, households, skilled trades, farming, fortification, and defense, while Catholic institutions also shaped community life. Enslaved status remained coercive, but manumission and military service helped some people gain freedom, as Spanish Florida and Fort Mose demonstrate.

  68. Карточка 68

    Вопрос

How did enslaved labor vary across Britain's American colonies?

    Ответ

It was widespread but most concentrated in plantation regions. Small New England farms enslaved relatively few people, port cities held enslaved minorities, Chesapeake and Lower South plantations used far more, and Britain sent far more enslaved Africans to the Caribbean than to its mainland colonies.

  69. Карточка 69

    Вопрос

How did New England's environment shape its colonial economy?

    Ответ

Small farms, forests, fisheries, ports, and trade mattered more than staple-crop plantations. Compact towns and family labor reflected the region's climate, soil, and migration patterns.

  70. Карточка 70

    Вопрос

Why did mistrust grow between British colonists and imperial leaders before 1754?

    Ответ

Their priorities diverged over trade rules, frontier defense, land policy, and self-government. Colonists resisted limits on local choices, while imperial officials treated evasion and resistance as threats to order.

  71. Карточка 71

    Вопрос

How did William Penn shape colonial Pennsylvania?

    Ответ

He built a Quaker-led proprietary colony that promoted religious toleration and representative government. Its land and policies attracted diverse European migrants, though settlement still displaced Native people.

  72. Карточка 72

    Вопрос

Why did tobacco planters in the Chesapeake and North Carolina increasingly turn to African chattel slavery?

    Ответ

A smaller servant supply, longer life expectancy, and demand for controllable labor favored lifetime bondage. The transition from indenture was gradual, but racial and hereditary slavery became central to tobacco production in both regions.

  73. Карточка 73

    Вопрос

What goal shaped the Massachusetts Bay Colony?

    Ответ

Puritans aimed to build a disciplined Christian commonwealth. Their congregations and town governments fostered participation for church members while enforcing religious conformity.

  74. Карточка 74

    Вопрос

What tensions drove Bacon's Rebellion in 1676?

    Ответ

Frontier violence, falling tobacco prices, and anger at Governor Berkeley’s political favoritism. Bacon’s coalition demanded war against nearby Native peoples and burned Jamestown, exposing class conflict and settler pressure on Native land.

  75. Карточка 75

    Вопрос

Why did early Chesapeake society have unstable families and high mortality?

    Ответ

Disease, a male-heavy migrant population, and harsh labor conditions disrupted family formation. Conditions became more stable as survival improved later in the seventeenth century.

  76. Карточка 76

    Вопрос

What did Anglicization mean in the eighteenth-century British colonies?

    Ответ

Colonists became more connected to British culture and commerce. Imported goods, print, Protestant networks, and English political forms drew the colonies closer to Britain even as local self-government developed.

  77. Карточка 77

    Вопрос

What most explains the different colonial societies that emerged by 1754?

    Ответ

Imperial goals interacted with regional environments, migration, labor systems, and Native relations. The result was a connected Atlantic world with sharply different local economies and cultures.

  78. Карточка 78

    Вопрос

What caused the Seven Years' War in North America?

    Ответ

Competition over the Ohio Valley drew Britain, France, and Native nations into war. The British and French empires sought territory and trade, while Native nations chose alliances to defend their own power and homelands.

  79. Карточка 79

    Вопрос

Which Enlightenment idea most directly shaped the Revolution's natural-rights argument?

    Ответ

John Locke's claim that people possess rights and may resist a government that violates them. Colonists adapted this social-contract reasoning to justify independence.

  80. Карточка 80

    Вопрос

How did Enlightenment and religious ideas weaken respect for inherited hierarchy before the Revolution?

    Ответ

They tied liberty to individual ability, moral agency, and a larger providential mission. Many colonists increasingly questioned hereditary privilege and described themselves as a people especially suited to preserve freedom.

  81. Карточка 81

    Вопрос

How did Britain's victory in the Seven Years' War reshape its empire?

    Ответ

Britain gained vast North American claims and a much larger debt. Managing the new territory and raising colonial revenue pulled London toward tighter control.

  82. Карточка 82

    Вопрос

What did Pontiac's War demonstrate after 1763?

    Ответ

Native nations could coordinate powerful resistance to British expansion. Pontiac’s War challenged British occupation policies and helped convince officials that rapid western settlement could provoke a wider conflict.

  83. Карточка 83

    Вопрос

What argument did the Declaration of Independence make?

    Ответ

People hold natural rights, governments derive power from consent, and persistent tyranny justifies revolution. Its list of grievances applied that argument to George III and separation from Britain.

  84. Карточка 84

    Вопрос

How did the Revolution change women's political role without granting equal citizenship?

    Ответ

Women gained public importance through boycotts, wartime work, and republican motherhood. The ideal linked women's education to raising virtuous citizens while leaving formal political rights largely male.

  85. Карточка 85

    Вопрос

Why did Britain's post-1763 policies feel like a break to many colonists?

    Ответ

Parliament replaced loose oversight with more taxes and enforcement. Colonists had grown used to self-taxation and local rule during salutary neglect.

  86. Карточка 86

    Вопрос

Why did Britain issue the Proclamation of 1763?

    Ответ

To limit settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains and reduce frontier war. Many colonists ignored or resented the boundary because they wanted western land.

  87. Карточка 87

    Вопрос

Why did many Native nations favor Britain or neutrality during the Revolution?

    Ответ

They expected U.S. independence to intensify settler pressure on Native lands. Each nation made its own strategic choice, and some communities divided over whether Britain, the Patriots, or neutrality offered the best protection.

  88. Карточка 88

    Вопрос

Why was the American victory at Saratoga a turning point?

    Ответ

It convinced France that the United States could survive and was worth a formal alliance. The victory changed the diplomatic balance by turning a colonial rebellion into a war involving another major European power.

  89. Карточка 89

    Вопрос

Why did the Stamp Act provoke unusually broad resistance?

    Ответ

It directly taxed common printed materials inside the colonies. Protest and boycotts helped win repeal, but Parliament's Declaratory Act still claimed full lawmaking power over the colonies.

    Вопрос

Why did Irish and German migration to the United States surge in the 1840s?

    Ответ

Famine, economic hardship, political upheaval, and religious pressure pushed people toward American jobs and land. Many Irish settled in eastern cities, while German migrants also built communities across the Midwest.

  186. Карточка 186

    Вопрос

What public-school program did Horace Mann promote?

    Ответ

  187. Карточка 187

    Вопрос

How did Jackson's Bank War destabilize credit?

    Ответ

He removed federal deposits from the Second Bank and placed them in selected state banks, encouraging speculative lending. Later credit tightening, the Specie Circular, and international shocks all helped set the stage for the Panic of 1837.

  188. Карточка 188

    Вопрос

What commercial advantage did steamboats bring to inland rivers?

    Ответ

They carried people and freight upstream as well as downstream on more reliable schedules. Two-way travel helped turn the Mississippi River system into a larger commercial network.

  189. Карточка 189

    Вопрос

Why did plantation slavery expand west of the Appalachians?

    Ответ

Exhausted soils in older planting areas and fertile western land drew slaveholders toward the Deep South. Cotton profits and the domestic slave trade carried coerced labor westward, often breaking apart enslaved families.

  190. Карточка 190

    Вопрос

How did abolitionism shape—and complicate—the early women's rights movement?

    Ответ

It gave women organizing experience while exposing their own political exclusion. The movement carried abolitionist equality claims into Seneca Falls, then faced disputes over whether those claims would reach all women or narrow around White women's rights.

  191. Карточка 191

    Вопрос

Why did Americans move west between the 1820s and 1840s?

    Ответ

Affordable land, farming, trade, transport routes, and hopes of economic independence pulled migrants beyond older settlements. Federal land policy and new routes aided migration while settlement dispossessed Native and Mexican communities.

  192. Карточка 192

    Вопрос

How did Andrew Jackson expand the everyday power of the presidency?

    Ответ

He used the veto to reject policy, not merely legislation he considered unconstitutional, and claimed a direct popular mandate. That approach made the president a more forceful competitor with Congress.

  193. Карточка 193

    Вопрос

Why did transport links integrate the Northeast and Midwest more closely than the South?

    Ответ

Canals and railroads exchanged western food for northeastern manufactured goods through an increasingly dense regional network. The South remained more tied to rivers and Atlantic cotton exports, although northern banks, shippers, and mills still connected it to the national economy.

  194. Карточка 194

    Вопрос

What did the Seneca Falls Convention place on the national reform agenda in 1848?

    Ответ

Equal legal, social, and political rights for women, including suffrage. Its Declaration of Sentiments recast the language of the Declaration of Independence to expose gender inequality.

  195. Карточка 195

    Вопрос

What did transcendentalists such as Emerson and Thoreau value?

    Ответ

Individual conscience, self-reliance, nature, and insight beyond inherited institutions. Their Romantic faith in human potential challenged conformity and fed experiments in reform and simple living.

  196. Карточка 196

    Вопрос

Why did the Cherokee Trail of Tears occur despite legal resistance?

    Ответ

Georgia's land hunger and federal removal policy overrode Cherokee sovereignty and court victories. U.S. troops forced the 1838–1839 migration west, where disease, hunger, and exposure killed thousands.

  197. Карточка 197

    Вопрос

What held the Whig Party together in the 1830s?

    Ответ

Opposition to Jackson's strong presidency and support for congressional government and economic development. The coalition included groups with conflicting positions on slavery, a fault line that later helped break it apart.

  198. Карточка 198

    Вопрос

How did slavery shape status among White southerners who enslaved no one?

    Ответ

A small planter elite held outsized wealth and power, but the racial order still gave non-slaveholding White people legal and social standing above Black people. Southern leaders used that hierarchy to defend slavery as a regional way of life.

  199. Карточка 199

    Вопрос

How did Dorothea Dix change public treatment of mental illness?

    Ответ

She documented abusive confinement and persuaded states to fund specialized hospitals. Her campaign reflected reformers' belief that better institutions could rehabilitate people instead of merely punishing or hiding them.

  200. Карточка 200

    Вопрос

How did railroads and the telegraph let businesses operate on a national scale?

    Ответ

Railroads moved goods across seasons and regions, while telegraph lines moved information almost instantly. Merchants could coordinate prices, orders, investment, and shipments over long distances.

  201. Карточка 201

    Вопрос

Who remained outside Jacksonian democracy as White male voting expanded?

    Ответ

Women, most Black people, and Native peoples remained politically excluded, while slavery and removal grew. The period widened participation within a racial and gender boundary rather than establishing universal democracy.

  202. Карточка 202

    Вопрос

How did the Latter-day Saints link antebellum religious innovation with westward migration?

    Ответ

They built new religious communities farther west after repeated hostility and violence. Organized migration gave members space to practice their faith while carrying a new movement beyond older eastern settlements.

  203. Карточка 203

    Вопрос

What conflict gives Period 5 its overall shape?

    Ответ

Territorial expansion sharpened the dispute over slavery until civil war and Reconstruction redefined freedom, citizenship, and federal power. The period links western conquest to sectional breakdown, Union victory, emancipation, and an unfinished struggle over equal rights.

  204. Карточка 204

    Вопрос

How did Manifest Destiny justify westward expansion?

    Ответ

Supporters claimed that the United States had a providential mission to spread its institutions across the continent. The idea joined land hunger and commercial ambition to White Protestant nationalism while dismissing Mexican and Native sovereignty.

  205. Карточка 205

    Вопрос

Why did annexing Texas intensify sectional and international tensions?

    Ответ

Texas entered as a slave state and brought a disputed boundary with Mexico into the Union. The annexation raised fears of further slave-state expansion and helped turn strained U.S.–Mexican relations toward war.

  206. Карточка 206

    Вопрос

What border dispute helped start the Mexican–American War?

    Ответ

Mexico treated the Nueces River as Texas's boundary, while the United States claimed land south to the Rio Grande. Polk sent troops into that contested strip, and a clash there became his basis for asking Congress to declare war.

  207. Карточка 207

    Вопрос

How did northern and southern labor systems diverge by the 1850s?

    Ответ

The North relied increasingly on manufacturing and free labor, while plantation agriculture made the South heavily dependent on enslaved labor. Both regions participated in markets, but their labor systems produced sharply different political interests.

  208. Карточка 208

    Вопрос

What territorial settlement ended the Mexican–American War?

    Ответ

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo recognized the Rio Grande boundary and transferred the Mexican Cession to the United States. The United States paid $15 million, while the new territory reopened disputes over slavery and citizenship.

  209. Карточка 209

    Вопрос

Why did critics call the Mexican–American War a war for slavery?

    Ответ

They believed Polk had provoked conquest to create new territory for slaveholders. Antislavery critics also challenged the war on constitutional and moral grounds, even though opposition carried political risk during wartime.

  210. Карточка 210

    Вопрос

Why did the Wilmot Proviso matter even though it never became law?

    Ответ

It exposed a sectional split over excluding slavery from land acquired from Mexico. Repeated House approval and Senate rejection showed that older party loyalties were giving way to sectional voting.

  211. Карточка 211

    Вопрос

How did the Treaty of Kanagawa advance U.S. interests in Asia?

    Ответ

It opened two Japanese ports to American ships and established formal diplomatic access. Perry's 1854 agreement secured supplies, protection for shipwrecked sailors, and a U.S. consul, creating a foothold for later commerce.

  212. Карточка 212

    Вопрос

How did the United States settle the Oregon boundary dispute with Britain?

    Ответ

The Oregon Treaty divided most of the contested region at the 49th parallel. The 1846 agreement shows that U.S. territorial growth came through negotiation as well as warfare.

  213. Карточка 213

    Вопрос

How did U.S. rule disrupt Mexican American and Native communities in the newly acquired West?

    Ответ

New governments, settlers, courts, and military force weakened landholding, economic independence, and cultural autonomy. Treaty promises didn't prevent many Mexican Americans from losing property, while Native nations faced violent dispossession and confinement.

  214. Карточка 214

    Вопрос

Why did the Mexican Cession turn slavery into an urgent national dispute?

    Ответ

Each new territory raised the question of whether slavery could expand and alter the balance of political power. Land acquired from Mexico converted a long-running sectional disagreement into an immediate fight over federal policy.

  215. Карточка 215

    Вопрос

How did Civil War-era federal laws speed western settlement?

    Ответ

The Homestead Act offered public land to qualifying settlers, while the Pacific Railway Act supported a transcontinental railroad and telegraph. Together, federal land and transport policy made migration and western commercial development easier while increasing pressure on Native lands.

  216. Карточка 216

    Вопрос

How did the Civil War enlarge federal economic power?

    Ответ

Congress created national banking and backed tariffs, homesteads, railroads, and land-grant colleges while southern members were absent. These measures tied the Union war effort to a national free-labor development program.

  217. Карточка 217

    Вопрос

How did Irish and German immigrants reshape U.S. communities before the Civil War?

    Ответ

They expanded urban labor forces and built ethnic neighborhoods, churches, newspapers, schools, and political networks. These communities preserved parts of their languages and customs while adapting to American life.

  218. Карточка 218

    Вопрос

What sectional bargain did the Compromise of 1850 attempt?

    Ответ

It admitted California as free while granting concessions valued by slave states. Utah and New Mexico used popular sovereignty, Washington ended its slave trade, and Congress enacted a stronger fugitive-slave law.

  219. Карточка 219

    Вопрос

What did the Free Soil movement oppose?

    Ответ

It opposed extending slavery into western territories. Many supporters defended opportunity for free White labor rather than racial equality or immediate abolition in states where slavery already existed.

  220. Карточка 220

    Вопрос

What did popular sovereignty promise in the territorial slavery debate?

    Ответ

It promised that territorial settlers would decide whether to permit slavery. Supporters presented local voting as a democratic compromise, but the policy couldn't remove the national moral and political conflict.

  221. Карточка 221

    Вопрос

How did commercial treaties also widen U.S. cultural ties with Asia?

    Ответ

Treaty ports and formal relations created channels for missionaries, educators, translators, and students as well as merchants. The 1844 Treaty of Wangxia protected American missionary activity in China, linking trade diplomacy to cultural exchange.

  222. Карточка 222

    Вопрос

How did Chinese migration shape western communities during Period 5?

    Ответ

Migrants joined mining, railroad construction, farming, service work, and urban commerce while building durable community institutions. Chinatowns, temples, associations, and family networks preserved culture and mutual support amid intense discrimination.

  223. Карточка 223

    Вопрос

How did racial hierarchy reinforce the case for continental expansion?

    Ответ

Many White expansionists cast Anglo-American rule as superior and conquest as progress. That claim made the loss of Native land and Mexican American autonomy look acceptable to supporters of expansion.

  224. Карточка 224

    Вопрос

What arguments did proslavery thinkers use in the sectional crisis?

    Ответ

They invoked racial hierarchy, described slavery as a positive social good, and claimed constitutional protection through property and states' rights. These defenses went beyond treating slavery as a temporary necessity.

  225. Карточка 225

    Вопрос

How did many Free Soilers differ from abolitionists?

    Ответ

Abolitionists attacked slavery itself, while many Free Soilers chiefly wanted western land reserved for free White labor. Opposition to expansion therefore didn't automatically mean support for racial equality or immediate emancipation.

  226. Карточка 226

    Вопрос

What did the Know-Nothing movement try to limit?

    Ответ

Its anti-Catholic nativism targeted immigrants' political power and cultural influence. The movement promoted longer naturalization periods and native-born control of government, treating many Irish and German Catholics as unfit for full participation.

  227. Карточка 227

    Вопрос

Why did the Kansas–Nebraska Act overturn an older sectional settlement?

    Ответ

It repealed the Missouri Compromise restriction and authorized settlers in Kansas and Nebraska to decide slavery through popular sovereignty. The change shattered the Whigs, fueled sectional organizing, and opened Kansas to a violent contest.

  228. Карточка 228

    Вопрос

Why did thousands of overland migrants head to Oregon in the 1840s?

    Ответ

They pursued affordable farmland and the promise of a better life in the Pacific Northwest. Family migration along the Oregon Trail built permanent U.S. settlements, strengthened American claims before the 1846 boundary agreement, and intensified the displacement of Native communities.

  229. Карточка 229

    Вопрос

What structural advantages favored the Union in a long Civil War?

    Ответ

The Union had more people, factories, railroads, finance, food production, and naval capacity. Those resources could sustain large armies and a blockade, though political will and effective command still mattered.

  230. Карточка 230

    Вопрос

What issue first held the Republican Party together?

    Ответ

Opposition to extending slavery into the territories united the new party. Former Whigs, Free Soilers, antislavery Democrats, and other northern voters built a sectional coalition after the Kansas–Nebraska Act.

  231. Карточка 231

    Вопрос

Why did Lincoln's 1860 victory trigger secession?

    Ответ

He won on a free-soil Republican platform without southern electoral votes, convincing many slaveholders that their national influence and slavery's future were endangered. Seven Deep South states left first; four more slave states seceded after Fort Sumter and Lincoln's call for troops.

  232. Карточка 232

    Вопрос

What evidence places slavery at the center of Confederate independence?

    Ответ

Secession declarations and the Confederate Constitution openly protected slavery and White supremacy. States' rights arguments focused above all on preserving a slaveholding social and economic order.

  233. Карточка 233

    Вопрос

Why did Fort Sumter turn secession into open war?

    Ответ

Confederate forces fired on a federal garrison after Lincoln decided to resupply it. The attack let the administration frame the conflict as a rebellion and prompted both Union mobilization and another wave of secession.

  234. Карточка 234

    Вопрос

Why did the Dred Scott decision deepen sectional conflict?

    Ответ

The Court denied U.S. citizenship to Black people and ruled that Congress couldn't bar slavery from federal territories. The decision undercut compromise and persuaded many northerners that slaveholding power threatened free-state interests.

  235. Карточка 235

    Вопрос

What methods made abolitionism highly visible before the Civil War?

    Ответ

Black and White abolitionists used moral argument, speeches, print, petitions, aid to freedom seekers, and sometimes armed action. They remained a northern minority, but they forced slavery into public debate.

  236. Карточка 236

    Вопрос

Why did Antietam create a political opening for emancipation?

    Ответ

Stopping Lee's invasion gave Lincoln enough military credibility to announce preliminary emancipation. Linking Union victory to freedom also made British or French recognition of the Confederacy harder to defend.

  237. Карточка 237

    Вопрос

Why did Bleeding Kansas discredit popular sovereignty?

    Ответ

Rival settlers used fraudulent elections and armed violence instead of producing a peaceful local decision. The struggle showed that voting rules couldn't neutralize the national conflict over slavery.

  238. Карточка 238

    Вопрос

Why was Gettysburg a military and ideological turning point?

    Ответ

The Union stopped Lee's largest invasion of the North, and Lincoln later cast the war as a test of equality and representative government. The Gettysburg Address connected Union survival to a renewed promise of freedom.

  239. Карточка 239

    Вопрос

What was the strategic logic of the Anaconda Plan?

    Ответ

Blockade Confederate ports and seize the Mississippi River to restrict trade and split the South. The strategy used Union naval and material strength to squeeze the Confederacy over time.

  240. Карточка 240

    Вопрос

Why was the Union capture of Vicksburg strategically decisive?

    Ответ

It gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy. The victory elevated Grant and, together with Gettysburg, shifted the war's momentum in 1863.

  241. Карточка 241

    Вопрос

Why did the Union ultimately win the Civil War?

    Ответ

Greater resources became decisive when joined to stronger leadership, coordinated strategy, emancipation, key victories, and sustained political will. Blockade and hard war steadily exhausted Confederate manpower, transport, supplies, and infrastructure.

  242. Карточка 242

    Вопрос

What did Union hard-war strategy attack by 1864?

    Ответ

It targeted Confederate armies and the railroads, supplies, factories, crops, and infrastructure that sustained them. Grant's coordinated pressure and Sherman's campaigns aimed to break both military capacity and the will to continue fighting.

  243. Карточка 243

    Вопрос

What did Lee's surrender at Appomattox resolve—and leave unresolved?

    Ответ

It effectively ended the Confederacy's main military resistance but didn't settle the terms of reunion or the meaning of freedom. Other armies surrendered soon after, while Reconstruction opened a new political struggle.

  244. Карточка 244

    Вопрос

How did the Thirteenth Amendment go beyond wartime emancipation?

    Ответ

It abolished slavery throughout the United States, except as punishment for crime. Constitutional abolition reached places outside the Emancipation Proclamation and outlasted an executive war measure.

  245. Карточка 245

    Вопрос

Why did Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policy provoke Congress?

    Ответ

It restored southern governments quickly under lenient terms and offered freedpeople little federal protection. Former Confederate leaders regained influence, and state Black Codes restricted Black labor, movement, and civil freedom.

  246. Карточка 246

    Вопрос

What central disagreement drove the Lincoln–Douglas debates?

    Ответ

They disputed whether slavery's expansion could be contained within a democratic Union. Lincoln opposed expansion without then demanding immediate abolition in existing slave states; Douglas defended popular sovereignty.

  247. Карточка 247

    Вопрос

How did Uncle Tom's Cabin affect the sectional debate?

    Ответ

The novel brought slavery's violence to a mass northern readership and energized antislavery activism. Defenders of slavery attacked it as false, so its popularity widened the cultural distance between sections.

  248. Карточка 248

    Вопрос

What advantages helped the Confederacy resist a stronger Union?

    Ответ

It fought defensively on familiar ground, fielded experienced commanders, and could win by avoiding defeat long enough to exhaust northern will. Early battlefield success couldn't erase shortages, inflation, desertion, internal dissent, and a tightening blockade.

  249. Карточка 249

    Вопрос

What did the Civil Rights Act of 1866 establish?

    Ответ

It made most U.S.-born people citizens and guaranteed equal basic civil rights regardless of race. Congress overrode Johnson's veto, using federal law to attack Black Codes and protect contract, property, and court rights.

  250. Карточка 250

    Вопрос

Why did the Union treat slaveholding border states cautiously?

    Ответ

Their population, industry, rivers, and geography were strategically vital, and losing them would strengthen the Confederacy. Lincoln therefore moved carefully on emancipation early in the war while keeping Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, and Delaware in the Union.

  251. Карточка 251

    Вопрос

What constitutional dispute separated Lincoln's Reconstruction plan from the Wade–Davis Bill?

    Ответ

They disagreed over how demanding readmission should be and whether the president or Congress controlled it. Lincoln proposed a limited loyalty threshold; Wade–Davis required a majority of White men to swear a stricter oath.

  252. Карточка 252

    Вопрос

Why did sharecropping often block economic independence?

    Ответ

Landowners kept most southern land, while crop shares, merchant credit, liens, and controlled accounting trapped many Black and poor White families in debt. Emancipation changed legal status without delivering the land base most freed families sought.

  253. Карточка 253

    Вопрос

How did the Fourteenth Amendment strengthen the Civil Rights Act of 1866?

    Ответ

It placed birthright citizenship, due process, and equal protection in the Constitution instead of relying only on a federal statute. It rejected Dred Scott's citizenship rule and gave Congress enforcement power against state violations.

  254. Карточка 254

    Вопрос

Why did John Brown's raid alarm the slaveholding South?

    Ответ

His attempt to seize the Harpers Ferry arsenal and spark an enslaved uprising made armed abolition seem immediate. Most northerners rejected the raid, but public admiration for Brown after his execution magnified southern fear.

  255. Карточка 255

    Вопрос

Whom did the Emancipation Proclamation declare free?

    Ответ

It declared enslaved people free in areas still rebelling against the United States. It didn't directly cover loyal border states or every Union-occupied area, so military advance and constitutional abolition were still necessary.

  256. Карточка 256

    Вопрос

What did Reconstruction change despite its severe limits?

    Ответ

It established national constitutional rules for freedom, citizenship, equal protection, and voting while briefly widening Black political power. It didn't redistribute most land or secure lasting protection, leaving economic dependence and White resistance largely intact.

  257. Карточка 257

    Вопрос

Why did the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 provoke northern resistance?

    Ответ

It required federal enforcement of recapture and denied alleged fugitives ordinary legal protections. The law made residents of free states participate in slavery's maintenance, prompting personal-liberty laws, rescues, and wider antislavery anger.

  258. Карточка 258

    Вопрос

What protection did the Fifteenth Amendment add?

    Ответ

It barred federal and state governments from denying voting rights because of race, color, or previous servitude. It protected Black male suffrage in principle but left openings for facially different restrictions and didn't enfranchise women.

  259. Карточка 259

    Вопрос

Why did federal protection against Reconstruction-era terror weaken after early successes?

    Ответ

Enforcement Acts and federal prosecutions temporarily disrupted the Ku Klux Klan, but organized violence returned as court rulings narrowed federal reach and northern commitment faded. Local intimidation and election fraud then helped White conservatives recover power.

  260. Карточка 260

    Вопрос

Why was Andrew Johnson impeached but not removed?

    Ответ

His obstruction of congressional Reconstruction culminated in an alleged violation of the Tenure of Office Act. The House impeached him, but conviction in the Senate fell one vote short of the required two-thirds.

Illustrated panorama of U.S. history, from Indigenous communities and colonial settlement through emancipation, railroads, industry, war, modern cities, spaceflight, and digital networks.

  261. Карточка 261

    Вопрос

What services did the Freedmen's Bureau provide?

    Ответ

It supplied emergency aid, supported schools and family reunification, supervised labor contracts, and offered legal help to freedpeople and refugees. Small budgets, short authorization, presidential resistance, and White violence limited its reach.

  262. Карточка 262

    Вопрос

How did emancipation change the Union's diplomatic position?

    Ответ

It made destroying slavery an official Union purpose and raised the political cost of European support for the Confederacy. Enslaved people who fled plantations and joined Union forces also weakened the southern labor system from within.

  263. Карточка 263

    Вопрос

Why did Reconstruction end as a sustained federal project in 1877?

    Ответ

White southern violence and political tactics joined northern weariness, economic crisis, scandal, and restrictive court decisions to erode enforcement. The settlement of the disputed 1876 election removed remaining federal troops, helping Redeemer governments consolidate power.

  264. Карточка 264

    Вопрос

Why did the Reconstruction amendments both energize and divide women's rights activists?

    Ответ

Their expansion of national citizenship and voting protections encouraged suffrage activism, but the Fourteenth introduced male into the Constitution and the Fifteenth protected voting without sex equality. Activists split over whether to support Black male suffrage first or insist on universal suffrage.

  265. Карточка 265

    Вопрос

How did the Reconstruction Acts change southern readmission, and why was Tennessee treated differently?

    Ответ

They divided ten former Confederate states into five military districts and required new constitutions, Black male suffrage, and Fourteenth Amendment ratification. Tennessee was excluded because it had already ratified the amendment and regained congressional representation in 1866.

  266. Карточка 266

    Вопрос

How did Black political participation change the Reconstruction South?

    Ответ

Black voters and officeholders helped build public schools, civil-rights protections, and more representative state governments. This democratic expansion was real but brief, constrained by violence and the later restoration of White conservative rule.

  267. Карточка 267

    Вопрос

Which effects of the Civil War most changed American values?

    Ответ

Constitutional abolition and national citizenship most profoundly widened the country's stated ideals, even though enforcement failed many Black Americans. Stronger federal authority, emancipation, Black military service, and Reconstruction made freedom and equality national obligations while exposing the distance between principle and practice.

  268. Карточка 268

    Вопрос

How did segregation help strip Black Americans of Reconstruction-era rights?

    Ответ

It separated public life by race while turning unequal access into a system of White control. Segregated schools, transportation, housing, and public facilities worked with disfranchisement, violence, and discriminatory law to narrow citizenship in practice.

  269. Карточка 269

    Вопрос

Why did the California Gold Rush matter beyond mining?

    Ответ

It drew migrants from around the world, accelerated California statehood, and expanded Pacific commerce and settlement. The rush also intensified Native dispossession and forced Congress to confront California's status in the sectional balance.

  270. Карточка 270

    Вопрос

How did Black military service strengthen the Union war effort?

    Ответ

Nearly 200,000 Black soldiers and sailors added manpower, weakened slavery, and made emancipation a lived war aim. Their service strengthened claims to citizenship despite unequal treatment and severe danger if captured.

  271. Карточка 271

    Вопрос

How did wartime mobilization produce opposition on both home fronts?

    Ответ

Both governments raised armies, taxes, and supplies while facing resistance to conscription, inflation, shortages, and central authority. New York's racist draft riot, Confederate food protests, desertion, and unionism within the South show that neither home front was politically united.

  272. Карточка 272

    Вопрос

How did the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments support later civil-rights victories?

    Ответ

They supplied constitutional grounds for challenging state discrimination and race-based voting barriers. Later activists, lawyers, courts, and Congress used equal protection and voting-rights enforcement to attack segregation and disfranchisement long after Reconstruction ended.

  273. Карточка 273

    Вопрос

Which developments set the central pattern of U.S. history between 1865 and 1898?

    Ответ

A national industrial economy and an expanding West generated rapid growth alongside sharper struggles over citizenship, work, and land. Large enterprises, cities, and migration changed daily life, while racial exclusion, Native dispossession, farmer organizing, and strikes revealed durable inequalities.

  274. Карточка 274

    Вопрос

What federal incentive accelerated construction of the western railroad network?

    Ответ

Congress granted railroad corporations public acreage that could secure financing or be sold as tracks advanced. This aid reduced private risk and hastened commerce, but it also enlarged corporate landholdings and opportunities for speculation and abuse.

  275. Карточка 275

    Вопрос

How closely did the post-Reconstruction South match the New South vision?

    Ответ

Manufacturing and rail connections expanded, but the region remained heavily agricultural and unequal. Promoters celebrated mills and commerce, while tenancy, sharecropping, low pay, outside investment, and racial rule limited the promised transformation.

  276. Карточка 276

    Вопрос

What demographic change made post-1880 immigration especially controversial to nativists?

    Ответ

Southern and eastern Europeans formed an increasing portion of arrivals while immigration from older northern and western European sources continued. Greater religious and linguistic variety in industrial cities became a target for claims that newer groups could not assimilate.

  277. Карточка 277

    Вопрос

Why did the collapse of the bison population undermine many Plains nations?

    Ответ

It removed an essential base of subsistence, trade, and cultural life, reducing communities' ability to remain independent. Hunters, railroads, expanding settlement, and U.S. conquest together turned enormous herds into scarcity within a few decades.

  278. Карточка 278

    Вопрос

Why could industrial enterprise grow to unprecedented scale after the Civil War?

    Ответ

Natural resources, mobile investment, expanding labor, technological change, national demand, and favorable public policy reinforced one another. New methods of finance, administration, and advertising enabled firms to supervise far more production and distribution.

  279. Карточка 279

    Вопрос

What made Jim Crow a system rather than a collection of isolated segregation laws?

    Ответ

Legal separation worked together with intimidation and unequal access to schools, jobs, politics, and public facilities. These mutually reinforcing controls restored White dominance while leaving the formal constitutional amendments of Reconstruction in place.

  280. Карточка 280

    Вопрос

What made the first coast-to-coast railroad a turning point for the West?

    Ответ

It brought western producers and communities into much faster contact with eastern buyers, capital, and migrants. The 1869 connection shortened journeys, redirected trade, and encouraged towns to develop along the tracks; Chinese and Irish workers supplied much of the construction labor.

  281. Карточка 281

    Вопрос

How could greater agricultural productivity lower farm income?

    Ответ

Machines and expanded cultivation increased supply enough to depress commodity prices, while mortgages and other debts retained their stated value. Producing extra crops to meet those obligations could push prices lower again, deepening the deflationary trap.

  282. Карточка 282

    Вопрос

How did the Dawes Act pursue Native assimilation through property policy?

    Ответ

It substituted household allotments for much reservation land held by tribes and made remaining acreage available to outsiders. The private-property program diminished the territorial base of Native governments rather than simply converting farming practices.

  283. Карточка 283

    Вопрос

Why did collective organization appeal to industrial wage earners?

    Ответ

One worker had little leverage against an employer able to set long hours, hazardous conditions, unstable pay, and tightly controlled tasks. Unions and strikes made bargaining a group decision and sought protection from replacement, blacklisting, and child labor.

  284. Карточка 284

    Вопрос

How did the Homestead Act use federal land to attract settlers?

    Ответ

Claimants could obtain 160 acres by occupying and improving a parcel under the law's terms. Farming still required money and water, and speculation, difficult terrain, and Indigenous ownership meant that the promise of widely accessible land was never universal.

  285. Карточка 285

    Вопрос

What political conclusion did defenders draw from Social Darwinism?

    Ответ

They portrayed unequal economic outcomes as a natural test that government should not disturb. By translating evolutionary ideas into a social ranking, they made accumulated wealth appear deserved and poverty appear to be an individual failing.

  286. Карточка 286

    Вопрос

How could a trust or holding company reduce independent competition?

    Ответ

A central authority could direct numerous corporations that still appeared separate on paper. Such structures promised coordinated output, but opponents saw private power over prices, rivals, politics, and an increasing share of national wealth.

  287. Карточка 287

    Вопрос

How did U.S. treaty policy erode Native sovereignty in the late nineteenth-century West?

    Ответ

Agreements offered little security because federal authorities altered or disregarded them as non-Native demand for land increased. Military campaigns and reservation confinement then replaced nation-to-nation promises with direct U.S. control.

  288. Карточка 288

    Вопрос

What opportunities and hazards did rapid city growth concentrate in one place?

    Ответ

Urban centers gathered factories, migrants, finance, entertainment, poverty, and political influence at exceptional density. Transit and new construction extended metropolitan space, but sanitation, housing, and other public systems often failed to match the population.

  289. Карточка 289

    Вопрос

How did federal promotion of telegraph lines help connect U.S. industry with international networks?

    Ответ

Land privileges and other public incentives helped communications cross the continent, while undersea cables linked that system to overseas markets. Prices, orders, financial news, and instructions could circulate across national borders far sooner than goods or people traveled.

  290. Карточка 290

    Вопрос

How did southern governments suppress Black voting without writing a race-only qualification into law?

    Ответ

Officials administered taxes, literacy requirements, registration obstacles, and ancestry exceptions in racially discriminatory ways. Threats to life and livelihood made the ostensibly neutral rules even more effective at nullifying Fifteenth Amendment rights.

  291. Карточка 291

    Вопрос

Why did people move to both farms and fast-growing towns in the postwar West?

    Ответ

They pursued property, paid employment, or economic independence in agriculture, mining, ranching, railroad building, and local commerce. Those opportunities drew diverse migrants, but new settlements also competed for territory and natural resources.

  292. Карточка 292

    Вопрос

What does vertical integration mean in corporate organization?

    Ответ

A firm owns successive links needed to make and deliver its product. Bringing sources of raw material, transportation, manufacturing, and distribution under one authority can cut transaction costs and limit dependence on suppliers.

  293. Карточка 293

    Вопрос

Why did shipping and storage charges become a political grievance for farmers?

    Ответ

Producers needed railroads and grain elevators to reach buyers yet could rarely negotiate their rates or discriminatory terms. Dependence on a few powerful firms converted an individual marketing problem into a campaign for cooperative action and regulation.

  294. Карточка 294

    Вопрос

What competing answers emerged to the question of immigrant Americanization?

    Ответ

Some institutions demanded that newcomers discard ancestral practices; others treated U.S. participation and cultural pluralism as compatible. Schools, workplaces, reform groups, nativists, and immigrants all contested which language, behavior, and loyalty counted as American.

  295. Карточка 295

    Вопрос

How did federal boarding schools attempt to remake Indigenous children?

    Ответ

They separated students from their home communities and imposed English-language, Christian, vocational, and Euro-American routines. At institutions such as Carlisle, renaming, regimented discipline, and punishment of Native practices made cultural replacement an official educational aim.

  296. Карточка 296

    Вопрос

Why did the Knights of Labor represent an expansive model of unionism?

    Ответ

The organization welcomed many wage earners whom craft unions excluded and paired workplace demands with cooperative economic reform. Its membership included skilled and unskilled workers and, despite limits, substantial numbers of women and Black workers.

  297. Карточка 297

    Вопрос

How did rail transportation create one national marketplace?

    Ответ

Continuous routes carried inputs, food, manufactured goods, and customers among distant regions on coordinated schedules. The system stimulated coal and steel, encouraged standardized time, and required corporations capable of managing operations across many states.

  298. Карточка 298

    Вопрос

How did the Gospel of Wealth justify philanthropy without challenging private fortunes?

    Ответ

It said affluent individuals should direct surplus wealth toward lasting public institutions during their lifetimes. Carnegie's support for libraries and education accepted a social duty for riches while preserving the owner's authority to decide how money was used.

  299. Карточка 299

    Вопрос

What conditions made tenements a focus of urban reform?

    Ответ

Crowded rooms, inadequate air and sanitation, fire hazards, and contagious disease made cheap worker housing dangerous. Families needed to live near employment, while construction standards and municipal services lagged behind city growth.

  300. Карточка 300

    Вопрос

Why was the Battle of Little Bighorn a victory without lasting strategic success for Native resistance?

    Ответ

The defeat of Custer's command in 1876 was followed by intensified U.S. pursuit and pressure to surrender territory. Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho fighters prevailed in the battle, but the federal government possessed the resources to continue the war.

  301. Карточка 301

    Вопрос

What distinct business advantages came from electric power and the telephone?

    Ответ

Electricity made lighting and motor-driven work more flexible, while telephones allowed spoken decisions across distance. Factories could reorganize equipment and schedules, and urban businesses could direct operations without waiting for a messenger.

  302. Карточка 302

    Вопрос

What constitutional rule did the Supreme Court accept in Plessy v. Ferguson?

    Ответ

The Court allowed compulsory racial separation if states labeled the facilities equal. Its 1896 decision legitimized the legal architecture of Jim Crow despite the systematically inferior conditions imposed on Black Americans.

  303. Карточка 303

    Вопрос

How did Carnegie's steel business illustrate vertical integration?

    Ответ

It brought mineral supplies, fuel, transport, and mills into a coordinated production chain. Controlling essential inputs, adopting efficient machinery, and lowering costs made the company less reliant on outside sellers and more competitive.

  304. Карточка 304

    Вопрос

How did the Grange turn shared rural problems into collective action?

    Ответ

It joined education and community life with cooperative purchasing, marketing, and campaigns against unfair transport practices. Members helped secure state railroad rules and developed organizational experience that later agrarian movements expanded.

  305. Карточка 305

    Вопрос

How could an ethnic neighborhood support both cultural continuity and adaptation?

    Ответ

Community institutions preserved worship, language, food, news, and mutual aid while residents learned how to work and participate in U.S. cities. This combination let immigrant families modify traditions without choosing either complete isolation or wholesale abandonment.

  306. Карточка 306

    Вопрос

What kept many southern tenant families tied to the crop-lien system?

    Ответ

Creditors supplied necessities in return for a claim on the harvest, with costly terms that were hard to clear when prices fell. The arrangement encouraged reliance on cash crops and renewed debt, constraining both Black and White farmers' choices.

  307. Карточка 307

    Вопрос

Why did the railroad walkout of 1877 become a national crisis?

    Ответ

Repeated wage cuts sparked connected stoppages across an interstate transportation system, and authorities deployed armed force to reopen it. State militia action and federal troops demonstrated that a dispute beginning at one company could disrupt commerce across regions.

  308. Карточка 308

    Вопрос

Why did many Mexican American landholders lose property after the Southwest entered the United States?

    Ответ

They had to defend older grants under unfamiliar U.S. procedures that were slow, expensive, and vulnerable to fraud and competing claims. Although the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo promised respect for property, litigation costs and the 1851 California claims process could consume or defeat a family's title.

  309. Карточка 309

    Вопрос

How did Native communities preserve collective autonomy despite federal assimilation campaigns?

    Ответ

They kept governing relationships and community obligations alive even as officials divided land and sent children to boarding schools. Families adapted selectively, passed knowledge across generations, and rebuilt institutions on terms the federal program never controlled completely.

  310. Карточка 310

    Вопрос

Why did political machines win loyalty from many city residents?

    Ответ

Ward organizations delivered employment, emergency assistance, and access to municipal offices in return for dependable votes. Their practical aid could help newcomers, but patronage, kickbacks, and control of elections made that service inseparable from corruption.

  311. Карточка 311

    Вопрос

What did laissez-faire advocates prescribe when the economy contracted?

    Ответ

They favored allowing prices, wages, and unsuccessful firms to adjust with little public relief or regulation. Proponents expected competition to restore durable growth, even though panics left workers unemployed and debtors under severe pressure.

  312. Карточка 312

    Вопрос

How does horizontal integration differ from control of a supply chain?

    Ответ

It combines competitors performing the same stage of an industry rather than bringing successive stages together. Acquiring or overpowering rival producers can give one enterprise command of output, prices, and distribution access.

  313. Карточка 313

    Вопрос

What new political direction did the Farmers' Alliances add to agrarian cooperation?

    Ответ

They linked regional networks of producers to proposals for public credit, monetary change, and railroad oversight. White and separate Black alliances confronted similar market pressures, and their campaigns supplied organizers and ideas to the People's Party.

  314. Карточка 314

    Вопрос

How did reliance on Chinese labor coexist with the Chinese Exclusion Act?

    Ответ

Western employers benefited from Chinese workers, especially on railroads, while racial campaigns demanded their removal from the labor market and polity. Federal law in 1882 halted most Chinese labor immigration and prevented Chinese immigrants from naturalizing.

  315. Карточка 315

    Вопрос

How did the Haymarket bombing alter public attitudes toward labor activism?

    Ответ

Opponents used the 1886 explosion to portray organized workers as revolutionary and violent. Uncertainty over who threw the bomb did not prevent prosecutions and fear from weakening the Knights and broader union recruitment.

  316. Карточка 316

    Вопрос

Why did the Ghost Dance precede mass killing at Wounded Knee?

    Ответ

Officials interpreted a spiritual movement among Native people as an uprising and escalated armed control of Lakota communities. During that campaign in 1890, U.S. troops killed men, women, and children at Wounded Knee, signaling the violent suppression of organized Plains resistance.

  317. Карточка 317

    Вопрос

Why was Ida B. Wells's anti-lynching campaign a challenge to Gilded Age power?

    Ответ

Her investigation showed that mob murder enforced racial, political, and economic control rather than responding to the excuses its defenders offered. Publishing evidence and organizing across the United States and Britain turned local terror into a public issue.

  318. Карточка 318

    Вопрос

How did inexpensive steel enlarge the nation's productive capacity?

    Ответ

High-volume refining supplied durable metal for rails, bridges, machines, and tall urban buildings at falling cost. Bessemer converters and later processes therefore supported both heavy manufacturing and the infrastructure on which other industries depended.

  319. Карточка 319

    Вопрос

How did the Pendleton Act begin to alter federal employment?

    Ответ

It placed a portion of civil-service jobs under competitive examinations instead of partisan appointment. Enacted in 1883 after Garfield's assassination, the measure reduced rather than abolished the spoils system.

  320. Карточка 320

    Вопрос

How did industrialization create a larger salaried middle class?

    Ответ

Complex corporations and cities required administrators, salespeople, professionals, and male and female office workers, many prepared by expanding education. Their earnings and leisure supported department stores, mass entertainment, and new forms of consumption.

  321. Карточка 321

    Вопрос

How did Standard Oil use horizontal integration?

    Ответ

It absorbed or eliminated competing refineries until one enterprise dominated oil processing. Railroad advantages, disciplined costs, and control of related services reinforced that position, combining cheaper kerosene with severely restricted rivalry.

  322. Карточка 322

    Вопрос

How did agrarian protest progress from local cooperation to national politics?

    Ответ

Farm families used Grange networks, then Alliances, and finally the People's Party to enlarge the scale of their response. Low prices, debt, freight dependence, and scarce credit convinced activists that self-help had to be joined by federal monetary and regulatory change.

  323. Карточка 323

    Вопрос

How did push-and-pull forces diversify the Gilded Age labor force?

    Ответ

Economic distress, persecution, scarce land, and racial danger drove departures, while employment, security, property, and family connections attracted migrants. Arrivals from abroad and movement within the country supplied workers to cities, industry, and western communities.

  324. Карточка 324

    Вопрос

What strategic choice separated the AFL from the Knights of Labor?

    Ответ

The AFL built federations of skilled trade unions around achievable gains in pay, hours, and conditions. It accepted the wage system and organized a narrower membership than the Knights' cross-trade reform coalition.

  325. Карточка 325

    Вопрос

Why did the Pacific draw greater U.S. commercial and strategic attention after the Civil War?

    Ответ

Industrial growth and new links to western ports made Pacific trade routes more valuable to business and government. Advocates of a wider U.S. presence viewed northern access and island harbors as links to Asian commerce and as places from which ships could operate.

  326. Карточка 326

    Вопрос

Why did Gilded Age party competition center on familiar loyalties and narrow economic disputes?

    Ответ

Both major parties assembled fragile coalitions around Civil War memory, tariffs, currency, patronage, ethnicity, and religion. Republicans more often backed protection and business, while Democrats tended toward lower tariffs and a smaller federal role, but neither coalition welcomed sweeping change.

  327. Карточка 327

    Вопрос

What precedent did the Interstate Commerce Act establish?

    Ответ

The federal government created a permanent commission to oversee practices in a major interstate business. The new ICC could investigate railroads, although restrictive court decisions and modest statutory power limited its early control of rates.

  328. Карточка 328

    Вопрос

What program distinguished the Populists' Omaha Platform from local farm self-help?

    Ответ

It converted agrarian discontent into a federal program for restraining concentrated economic power. Proposals included government operation of railroads, a larger currency, progressively taxed income, and popular rather than legislative selection of senators.

  329. Карточка 329

    Вопрос

Why was the Alaska Purchase important beyond the amount of land acquired?

    Ответ

It strengthened U.S. access to the northern Pacific, prospective resources, and routes toward Asian commerce. Seward's 1867 agreement with Russia looked remote to critics but extended the country's strategic and commercial reach.

  330. Карточка 330

    Вопрос

What explains the Exoduster movement to Kansas and other western destinations?

    Ответ

Black families left the South seeking safer communities, political freedom, and land on which they could control their own labor. White violence, disfranchisement, and coercive farm arrangements made western migration an appealing response after Reconstruction.

  331. Карточка 331

    Вопрос

Why did steelworkers lose the Homestead confrontation of 1892?

    Ответ

Management resumed production with outside labor after private security and Pennsylvania militia overcame union resistance. The defeat removed organized labor from the mill and made future union building in steel far more difficult.

  332. Карточка 332

    Вопрос

How did Social Gospel belief shape settlement-house reform led by women?

    Ответ

It judged industrial poverty and labor injustice to be moral problems requiring social as well as individual salvation. At places such as Hull-House, educated women joined direct services for immigrant neighbors with campaigns over housing, sanitation, work, and political equality.

  333. Карточка 333

    Вопрос

Why did advocates of free silver think monetary expansion would aid debtors?

    Ответ

Additional coinage was expected to raise the price level, increasing farm receipts and reducing the real burden of fixed loans. Supporters of gold valued tighter, more predictable money, turning the issue into a struggle between creditor and debtor interests.

  334. Карточка 334

    Вопрос

How did near-even party strength discourage broad federal reform?

    Ответ

Leaders protected delicate regional and ethnic coalitions by emphasizing turnout, patronage, and modest measures. Fierce elections therefore coexisted with corruption and slow national responses to monopoly, labor insecurity, and racial repression.

  335. Карточка 335

    Вопрос

Why did the Sherman Antitrust Act initially fail to restrain large corporations?

    Ответ

Ambiguous statutory language, limited enforcement, and restrictive judicial readings kept the prohibition weak. Early officials had more success invoking the 1890 act against labor combinations than dismantling dominant trusts.

  336. Карточка 336

    Вопрос

What made the federal response decisive in the Pullman boycott?

    Ответ

An injunction and troops reopened routes carrying the mails and interstate traffic. By treating disruption of transportation as grounds for national action, the government broke the strike and protected railroad operations.

  337. Карточка 337

    Вопрос

What forces led to the annexation of Hawaii in 1898?

    Ответ

Sugar and trade interests joined naval strategy and wartime demand for a mid-Pacific station. Annexation followed the 1893 overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani and proceeded in the face of organized petitions from Native Hawaiians.

  338. Карточка 338

    Вопрос

Why did mass production bring both broader consumption and greater inequality?

    Ответ

Lower unit costs and rising purchasing power put more goods within reach, yet ownership and profits became unusually concentrated. Material options improved for many households without distributing the new economy's gains evenly.

  339. Карточка 339

    Вопрос

Why did the 1896 election mark the collapse of Populism as an independent national force?

    Ответ

McKinley's victory established a durable Republican advantage, while Bryan's Democratic candidacy absorbed the free-silver cause. The result favored a gold-oriented urban-industrial coalition and left the People's Party without a distinct route to national power.

  340. Карточка 340

    Вопрос

What common advantage did public intervention give employers during major Gilded Age strikes?

    Ответ

Court orders, militia deployments, and federal troops helped companies restart transport or production before unions won recognition. Officials often treated blocked rail lines and threatened property as public emergencies, so state power narrowed workers' leverage.

  341. Карточка 341

    Вопрос

What balance of transformation and continuity best describes the United States from 1865 to 1898?

    Ответ

Industrial scale, national networks, western commerce, and metropolitan growth changed where and how Americans produced and lived, but power remained deeply unequal. Racial hierarchy, farm dependence, dispossession, and weak worker leverage persisted through new corporate, legal, and territorial arrangements.

  342. Карточка 342

    Вопрос

What conditions pushed the United States toward overseas expansion in the 1890s?

    Ответ

Industrial power and global rivalry made expansion look economically and strategically useful. U.S. businesses sought overseas markets, naval planners wanted bases, and competition with European empires raised fears of being shut out. Supporters also cited the supposedly closed western frontier and racial or cultural claims about an American mission abroad.

  343. Карточка 343

    Вопрос

What brought the United States into war with Spain in 1898?

    Ответ

Cuba's revolt, sensational reporting, humanitarian and strategic concerns, and the USS Maine explosion pushed the United States toward intervention. Spain's harsh rule mattered, but Americans blamed Spain for the Maine's destruction without conclusive proof.

  344. Карточка 344

    Вопрос

What was the purpose of the Open Door policy in China?

    Ответ

It sought equal commercial access for foreign powers while preserving China's territorial integrity. The policy aimed to protect U.S. trade without acquiring a formal Chinese colony, showing how economic expansion could operate without direct annexation.

  345. Карточка 345

    Вопрос

What did the Roosevelt Corollary add to the Monroe Doctrine?

    Ответ

It claimed a U.S. right to act as an international police power in the Western Hemisphere. Theodore Roosevelt used that claim to justify intervention in Latin American and Caribbean affairs, extending the Monroe Doctrine from warning outsiders to policing neighboring states.

  346. Карточка 346

    Вопрос

Why was the Panama Canal important to U.S. foreign policy?

    Ответ

It shortened naval and commercial travel between the Atlantic and Pacific. U.S. support for Panama's separation from Colombia also made the canal a clear example of Theodore Roosevelt's forceful diplomacy in Latin America.

  347. Карточка 347

    Вопрос

How did the Spanish-American War change U.S. power?

    Ответ

The United States emerged with an overseas empire and a larger role in Asia and the Caribbean. Spain ceded Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, while Cuba became formally independent but remained under strong U.S. influence.

  348. Карточка 348

    Вопрос

Why did the Philippine-American War follow the war with Spain?

    Ответ

Filipino nationalists resisted U.S. colonial rule after expecting independence. The brutal conflict exposed the contradiction between American claims of liberation and the decision to govern the Philippines without Filipino consent.

  349. Карточка 349

    Вопрос

What conditions gave rise to Progressivism?

    Ответ

Industrialization and urbanization produced visible problems that older institutions struggled to manage. Reformers targeted corporate power, unsafe work, political corruption, poverty, and unequal access to political influence.

  350. Карточка 350

    Вопрос

How did muckrakers advance Progressive reform?

    Ответ

They investigated abuses and turned them into public pressure for action. Ida Tarbell exposed Standard Oil, while Upton Sinclair's reporting on meatpacking helped build support for federal consumer protections.

  351. Карточка 351

    Вопрос

How did settlement houses approach urban poverty?

    Ответ

They combined neighborhood services with campaigns for social reform. Workers such as Jane Addams provided education, childcare, and aid to immigrants, then used what they learned to press for better housing and labor laws.

  352. Карточка 352

    Вопрос

How did Theodore Roosevelt's Square Deal approach corporate power?

    Ответ

It regulated large corporations rather than trying to eliminate every big business. Roosevelt distinguished between acceptable and abusive trusts, used federal authority against monopolistic practices, and cast government as a broker among business, labor, and consumers.

  353. Карточка 353

    Вопрос

Why did anti-imperialists oppose annexing overseas territories?

    Ответ

They argued that ruling people without their consent betrayed republican self-government and the tradition of avoiding overseas entanglements. Some also feared war or labor competition, and both supporters and opponents sometimes used racial theories for opposite conclusions.

  354. Карточка 354

    Вопрос

Which Progressive reforms gave voters more direct control over government?

    Ответ

The direct primary, initiative, referendum, recall, and direct election of senators expanded popular participation. The Seventeenth Amendment moved Senate elections from state legislatures to voters, while state-level reforms targeted party machines and unresponsive officials.

  355. Карточка 355

    Вопрос

What did the Nineteenth Amendment accomplish, and what limit remained?

    Ответ

It prohibited denying the vote on the basis of sex. Ratification in 1920 followed decades of organizing, but discriminatory laws and practices still blocked many women of color from voting.

  356. Карточка 356

    Вопрос

Why did the Triangle Shirtwaist fire spur labor reform?

    Ответ

The deaths exposed the human cost of unsafe factories and locked exits. Public outrage helped New York strengthen building codes, fire safety, and workplace regulation, making the disaster useful outside evidence for state-level Progressive reform.

  357. Карточка 357

    Вопрос

Where did Progressives divide over race, democracy, expertise, and immigration?

    Ответ

Progressivism never produced one consistent reform agenda. Some reformers accepted or ignored Southern segregation, while others challenged racial injustice. Some favored direct democracy, others expert-led administration, and Progressives also disagreed over restricting immigration. Efficiency and participation could point in different directions.

  358. Карточка 358

    Вопрос

How did preservationists and conservationists differ over natural resources?

    Ответ

Preservationists favored protecting nature from development, while conservationists favored expert-managed, efficient use. Both supported national parks, but figures such as John Muir and Gifford Pinchot disagreed over whether public lands should remain untouched or supply resources sustainably.

  359. Карточка 359

    Вопрос

    Ответ

It attacked tariffs, banking instability, and unfair competition with a different program of federal reform. The Underwood Tariff lowered duties, the Federal Reserve Act reorganized banking, and the FTC and Clayton Act strengthened oversight of business practices.

  361. Карточка 361

    Вопрос

Why did the United States enter World War I in 1917?

    Ответ

Germany's renewed unrestricted submarine warfare was the immediate cause. Economic ties to the Allies, the Zimmermann Telegram, neutral-rights disputes, and Wilson's call to defend democratic and humanitarian principles also shaped intervention.

  362. Карточка 362

    Вопрос

How did the federal government mobilize people and industry for World War I?

    Ответ

It used conscription and coordinated production on a new scale. The Selective Service Act built the army, while agencies such as the War Industries Board set priorities and encouraged industrial cooperation.

  363. Карточка 363

    Вопрос

Why did the Great Migration accelerate during World War I?

    Ответ

Northern war industries needed workers as European immigration slowed. Black southerners also moved to escape Jim Crow violence and limited opportunity while pursuing higher wages and greater political freedom in northern and western cities.

  364. Карточка 364

    Вопрос

How did World War I narrow civil liberties at home?

    Ответ

The government criminalized much antiwar speech and intensified attacks on labor activists and immigrant cultures. The Espionage and Sedition Acts targeted socialists, radicals, and other critics as wartime anxiety fed the First Red Scare.

  365. Карточка 365

    Вопрос

What postwar vision did Wilson's Fourteen Points advance?

    Ответ

They proposed a liberal international order built on open diplomacy, freer trade, national self-determination, and collective security. A League of Nations was the central institution meant to prevent another general war.

  366. Карточка 366

    Вопрос

How could the American Expeditionary Forces have a limited combat role yet still matter in World War I?

    Ответ

Most fighting had already occurred before large U.S. forces entered combat, but fresh American troops and resources helped tip the balance toward the exhausted Allies in 1918. The AEF's contribution was shorter than that of European armies, yet its manpower, morale, and offensives such as Meuse-Argonne strengthened the final Allied push.

  367. Карточка 367

    Вопрос

What role did the Committee on Public Information play in World War I?

    Ответ

It sold the war to the public through government propaganda. Posters, films, pamphlets, and speakers promoted enlistment, bond purchases, production, and suspicion of disloyalty.

  368. Карточка 368

    Вопрос

How did the Great Migration reshape northern and western cities?

    Ответ

It built large Black urban communities with new cultural and political influence. Migrants found opportunity but still faced job and housing discrimination, segregation, and racial violence, including the Red Summer of 1919.

  369. Карточка 369

    Вопрос

Why did the Senate reject the Treaty of Versailles?

    Ответ

Opponents feared the League of Nations could weaken congressional control over war and U.S. independence. Wilson's refusal to accept reservations helped prevent ratification, so the United States never joined the organization he had championed.

  370. Карточка 370

    Вопрос

What rule did Schenck v. United States apply to wartime speech?

    Ответ

Speech creating a clear and present danger could be restricted. The Supreme Court upheld a conviction for distributing anti-draft leaflets, reflecting the broad limits placed on dissent during World War I.

  371. Карточка 371

    Вопрос

How did U.S. foreign policy mix isolationism with international engagement in the 1920s?

    Ответ

The United States avoided binding alliances but stayed active through investment, peace diplomacy, and selective intervention. Private loans supported European recovery, diplomats negotiated naval limits and peace pacts, and U.S. forces remained involved in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

  372. Карточка 372

    Вопрос

What made mass production central to 1920s prosperity?

    Ответ

Standardized assembly-line production lowered unit costs and expanded consumer output. Automobiles became the leading example and stimulated steel, rubber, glass, oil, road building, and other linked industries.

  373. Карточка 373

    Вопрос

How did installment credit change consumer behavior in the 1920s?

    Ответ

It let households buy goods before saving the full price. Credit and advertising broadened mass consumption but also left some families carrying fragile debt, linking prosperity to financial risk.

  374. Карточка 374

    Вопрос

How did the 1920s quota laws change immigration policy?

    Ответ

They replaced the prewar peak in European immigration with sharply restricted, nationality-based entry. The quota system favored northern and western Europeans, cut arrivals from southern and eastern Europe, and reinforced barriers against Asian immigration.

  375. Карточка 375

    Вопрос

Why did radio and film create a more national culture in the 1920s?

    Ответ

They delivered the same news, entertainment, advertising, and celebrities to mass audiences. Shared media weakened some regional isolation while also giving wider audiences access to regional music and culture.

  376. Карточка 376

    Вопрос

Why was the 1920 census a turning point in U.S. urbanization?

    Ответ

It showed that a majority of Americans lived in urban places for the first time. Growing cities offered new economic opportunities to women, immigrants, and internal migrants, marking the country's continued shift from a rural, agricultural society toward an urban, industrial one.

  377. Карточка 377

    Вопрос

What was the historical significance of the Harlem Renaissance?

    Ответ

It made Black urban art and thought a major force in American culture. Writers, musicians, and artists expressed racial pride, examined discrimination, and drew on the Great Migration experience to shape both group identity and national culture.

  378. Карточка 378

    Вопрос

How did widespread automobile ownership alter American life?

    Ответ

It increased personal mobility and reorganized work, leisure, and settlement. Cars supported road construction, tourism, commuting, suburbs, and roadside businesses, so a factory product reshaped geography as well as consumption.

  379. Карточка 379

    Вопрос

What fueled the First Red Scare after World War I?

    Ответ

Revolution abroad, strikes at home, and a few bombings fed fear of radicalism. The Palmer Raids violated civil liberties by arresting and deporting suspected radicals with weak evidence and little due process.

  380. Карточка 380

    Вопрос

Why did gender roles become a major cultural debate in the 1920s?

    Ответ

Women's voting rights, urban jobs, consumer culture, and the visible 'New Woman' challenged older expectations of domestic dependence. Flapper imagery overstated how widely behavior changed, while the proposed Equal Rights Amendment revealed a real split between formal legal equality and protective labor laws for women.

  381. Карточка 381

    Вопрос

Why did the Ku Klux Klan grow nationally in the 1920s?

    Ответ

It mobilized white Protestant backlash against rapid social and cultural change. The revived Klan targeted Black Americans, immigrants, Catholics, Jews, and perceived moral disorder, turning nativism into a mass political movement.

  382. Карточка 382

    Вопрос

What conflict did the Scopes trial symbolize?

    Ответ

It symbolized a clash between Protestant fundamentalism and modern secular science. The trial over teaching evolution became a national argument about education, religion, modernism, and cultural authority.

  383. Карточка 383

    Вопрос

Why did Prohibition fail to end alcohol consumption?

    Ответ

Enforcement was uneven and demand stayed strong. Speakeasies, bootlegging, and organized crime flourished, helping build support for repeal through the Twenty-first Amendment.

  384. Карточка 384

    Вопрос

What structural weaknesses turned the 1929 crash into a wider depression?

    Ответ

Unequal purchasing power, overproduction, farm distress, speculative borrowing, and heavy consumer debt made the economy vulnerable. The market crash damaged confidence, but it wasn't the Depression's only cause.

  385. Карточка 385

    Вопрос

How did bank failures deepen the Great Depression?

    Ответ

They destroyed savings and contracted the money and credit available to the economy. Falling prices increased the real burden of debt, pushing more borrowers and businesses toward failure and strengthening calls for federal financial regulation.

  386. Карточка 386

    Вопрос

Why did the Great Depression spread internationally?

    Ответ

War debts, unstable finance, and collapsing trade linked national crises. U.S. lending fell, countries raised tariffs, and shrinking demand transmitted the downturn across the global economy.

  387. Карточка 387

    Вопрос

What caused the Dust Bowl migration?

    Ответ

Drought and damaging farming practices stripped Great Plains soil and livelihoods. Many displaced families moved west, especially to California, where they faced low wages and hostility.

  388. Карточка 388

    Вопрос

How did Hoover respond to the Great Depression?

    Ответ

He favored voluntary cooperation and limited federal loans over direct national relief. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation expanded federal action, but Hoover's approach looked inadequate as unemployment and suffering worsened.

  389. Карточка 389

    Вопрос

What were the three broad goals of the New Deal?

    Ответ

Relief, recovery, and reform. Programs offered immediate aid, tried to restart production and employment, and changed institutions to reduce the risk of another collapse, expanding federal responsibility for economic security.

  390. Карточка 390

    Вопрос

How did the Agricultural Adjustment Act try to raise farm prices?

    Ответ

It paid producers to reduce output. Lower supply could lift prices, but benefits often flowed to landowners while tenant farmers and sharecroppers lost work or land.

  391. Карточка 391

    Вопрос

What made the Tennessee Valley Authority unusual?

    Ответ

It combined regional planning with a federally owned power project. The TVA built dams for electricity, flood control, navigation, and development in a poor multi-state region.

  392. Карточка 392

    Вопрос

How did the First New Deal restore confidence in banks?

    Ответ

A bank holiday and federal inspection reopened sound banks, while new rules protected deposits. The Banking Act of 1933 created the FDIC and separated commercial from investment banking, answering the crisis with stronger federal oversight.

  393. Карточка 393

    Вопрос

Which pressures made broader New Deal reform politically urgent by 1935?

    Ответ

Radical critics, union organizers, and populist movements made the first reform round look too limited. Labor activists demanded stronger bargaining rights, Huey Long's Share Our Wealth movement called for redistribution, and Francis Townsend's pension campaign built support for old-age security.

  394. Карточка 394

    Вопрос

How did the Works Progress Administration provide relief?

    Ответ

It hired unemployed people for federally funded public work instead of relying only on direct cash aid. WPA workers built roads, schools, parks, and other facilities while also supporting arts, writing, and theater projects, making it a central Second New Deal employment program.

  395. Карточка 395

    Вопрос

How did the Wagner Act strengthen organized labor?

    Ответ

It protected collective bargaining and created the NLRB to police unfair labor practices. The law helped the CIO organize mass-production workers by industry and shifted federal policy toward stronger union rights.

  396. Карточка 396

    Вопрос

What lasting safety net did the Social Security Act create?

    Ответ

It established federal old-age insurance, unemployment insurance, and federal-state aid for some vulnerable people. Payroll contributions tied national benefits to employment, creating a lasting but limited federal welfare-state foundation.

  397. Карточка 397

    Вопрос

How did the New Deal realign national politics?

    Ответ

It made the Democratic Party the center of a broad governing coalition. Organized labor, many urban workers and immigrant communities, small farmers, liberals, the white South, and growing numbers of Black voters in northern cities backed Democrats despite tensions within the alliance.

  398. Карточка 398

    Вопрос

Did the New Deal end the Great Depression?

    Ответ

No; it eased suffering, reformed institutions, and produced partial recovery, but mass unemployment persisted. Wartime federal spending and mobilization finally restored full employment, so the New Deal's durable importance lies more in relief, regulation, and expanded federal responsibility.

  399. Карточка 399

    Вопрос

Which groups often received unequal New Deal benefits?

    Ответ

Black Americans, women, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, and many farm and domestic workers faced unequal access or discrimination. The New Deal widened federal responsibility without removing entrenched racial and gender inequality.

  400. Карточка 400

    Вопрос

Why did Roosevelt's court-packing plan backfire?

    Ответ

It looked like an effort to weaken judicial independence after the Supreme Court struck down New Deal laws. Congress rejected the plan, although later rulings became more accepting of federal economic regulation.

  401. Карточка 401

    Вопрос

How did U.S. policy move from neutrality toward aiding the Allies before Pearl Harbor?

    Ответ

Congress and Roosevelt shifted from Neutrality Acts to cash-and-carry, destroyers-for-bases, and Lend-Lease. Many Americans opposed entering the war even as fascist aggression caused growing concern, so aid expanded before formal belligerency.

  402. Карточка 402

    Вопрос

What immediate event brought the United States into World War II?

    Ответ

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor brought a U.S. declaration of war. Germany and Italy then declared war on the United States, ending the dominant opposition to military entry and turning participation into a two-ocean conflict.

  403. Карточка 403

    Вопрос

Why did internal migration surge toward urban production centers during World War II?

    Ответ

Defense factories and military installations created jobs just as the 1930s had displaced many workers. Millions moved to industrial cities, especially in the West and South; Black southerners joined a second phase of the Great Migration, while crowded boomtowns faced housing shortages and racial conflict.

  404. Карточка 404

    Вопрос

How did federal mobilization transform the World War II economy?

    Ответ

The government directed production, allocated scarce materials, financed war, and managed prices and rationing. Massive orders ended Depression-era unemployment, while the country's industrial base equipped U.S. forces and supplied the Allies as an 'arsenal of democracy.'

  405. Карточка 405

    Вопрос

How did World War II change women's paid work?

    Ответ

Labor shortages opened industrial and military-support jobs to millions of women. Wartime work challenged older gender expectations, though unequal pay persisted and many women were pushed out of defense jobs after 1945.

  406. Карточка 406

    Вопрос

What did the Double V campaign demand?

    Ответ

Victory over fascism abroad and racism at home. Black activism and threatened protest helped win a federal ban on discrimination in defense employment, even as segregation and discrimination remained widespread.

  407. Карточка 407

    Вопрос

How did wartime policy toward Mexican migration pull in contradictory directions?

    Ответ

The Bracero Program recruited Mexican laborers for wartime shortages even as older exclusion, coercive repatriation, and discriminatory enforcement shaped Mexican communities' experience. Migration from Mexico and elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere increased, but workers often faced low pay, poor conditions, and unequal treatment.

  408. Карточка 408

    Вопрос

How did evidence of Nazi genocide and Japanese wartime brutality shape Americans' understanding of World War II?

    Ответ

It strengthened the view that defeating the Axis had defended democracy against regimes built on racial conquest and mass violence. Nazi Germany systematically murdered six million Jews and persecuted millions of other people; liberation exposed its camps, while the Bataan Death March documented brutal Japanese treatment of prisoners. These crimes sharpened the war's democratic-versus-fascist meaning without erasing Allied injustices.

  409. Карточка 409

    Вопрос

What did Japanese American incarceration reveal about wartime civil liberties?

    Ответ

Fear and racism overrode individual rights without proof of disloyalty. Executive Order 9066 enabled mass removal and incarceration, and Korematsu upheld the exclusion policy at the time, showing how war could narrow constitutional protections.

  410. Карточка 410

    Вопрос

How did military service create both opportunity and conflict for women and minority Americans in World War II?

    Ответ

Service opened skilled roles, pay, training, and claims to fuller citizenship, but discrimination and segregation limited those gains. Women's military branches, the Tuskegee Airmen, Navajo Code Talkers, and Japanese American units are reusable evidence for contribution under unequal conditions.

  411. Карточка 411

    Вопрос

How did U.S. strategy differ in Europe and the Pacific?

    Ответ

The Allies prioritized defeating Germany, while U.S. forces advanced across selected Pacific islands toward Japan. D-Day opened a western front in Europe; island hopping bypassed some Japanese strongholds. Allied cooperation, scientific advances, and the work of servicemen and women supported both campaigns.

  412. Карточка 412

    Вопрос

What brought the Pacific War to an end in 1945, and why does the decision remain debated?

    Ответ

Japan surrendered after atomic bombs destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan. The bombs hastened the end, but historians and the public still debate necessity, alternatives, civilian deaths, and the morality of atomic warfare.

  413. Карточка 413

    Вопрос

Why did the United States emerge from World War II as the world's leading power?

    Ответ

Its homeland and industrial base remained intact while much of Europe and Asia was war-ravaged, and the United States had played a dominant role in Allied victory and peace planning. The United Nations and Bretton Woods institutions signaled sustained U.S. leadership, while Yalta and Potsdam exposed growing tension with the Soviet Union.

  414. Карточка 414

    Вопрос

Why did the wartime U.S.-Soviet alliance break down after 1945?

    Ответ

Conflicting security goals and ideologies turned the former allies into rivals. Soviet control in Eastern Europe alarmed U.S. leaders, while American economic power and nuclear weapons deepened Soviet suspicion.

  415. Карточка 415

    Вопрос

What did containment seek to accomplish?

    Ответ

Containment sought to block further expansion of Soviet influence. It didn't initially promise to overthrow existing communist governments; it aimed to prevent their reach from growing.

  416. Карточка 416

    Вопрос

How did decolonization change the Cold War?

    Ответ

New nations in Africa and the Middle East became targets of U.S. and Soviet competition, yet many resisted joining either bloc. Nonaligned leaders pursued sovereignty and development on their own terms, so local anticolonial struggles weren't simply extensions of the superpower rivalry.

  417. Карточка 417

    Вопрос

How did HUAC affect the film industry?

    Ответ

Its investigations helped create a Hollywood blacklist. People who refused to testify or name suspected communists could lose careers even without a criminal conviction.

  418. Карточка 418

    Вопрос

What was Eisenhower's strategy of massive retaliation?

    Ответ

It threatened overwhelming nuclear response to deter communist aggression. The policy aimed to contain costs through nuclear power, but it offered few flexible choices in smaller conflicts.

  419. Карточка 419

    Вопрос

How did Cold War competition shape U.S. policy in Latin America?

    Ответ

The United States used aid, covert action, and support for anticommunist regimes, even when those partners weren't democratic. The CIA-backed overthrow of Guatemala's government in 1954 shows how containment could outweigh democratic reform.

  420. Карточка 420

    Вопрос

What commitment did the Truman Doctrine announce?

    Ответ

The United States would aid governments resisting communist pressure or armed minorities. Immediate assistance went to Greece and Turkey, but the doctrine framed containment as a broad global responsibility.

  421. Карточка 421

    Вопрос

Why did decolonization complicate U.S. containment in Asia?

    Ответ

Nationalist movements could also be communist-led, making local independence struggles look like tests of global containment. In Vietnam, U.S. leaders backed France and then South Vietnam, while many newly independent Asian and African states still chose nonalignment.

  422. Карточка 422

    Вопрос

What consensus and conflict shaped the postwar Red Scare?

    Ответ

Democrats and Republicans broadly backed containment abroad but fought over how to investigate suspected communists at home. McCarthy's unsupported accusations damaged careers and civil liberties until televised Army hearings discredited his methods.

  423. Карточка 423

    Вопрос

How did Sputnik affect U.S. domestic policy?

    Ответ

It triggered federal investment in science, mathematics, languages, and space research. The National Defense Education Act and NASA tied education and technology to Cold War competition.

  424. Карточка 424

    Вопрос

How did GI Bill benefits widen postwar economic mobility?

    Ответ

Federal support for education, training, and home loans helped millions of veterans gain credentials and buy homes. Those benefits widened access to middle-class careers and property, although discriminatory lenders and local institutions often blocked Black veterans from equal access.

  425. Карточка 425

    Вопрос

How did economic policy support the U.S. Cold War strategy?

    Ответ

Aid and new international institutions strengthened a stable, open-market bloc. The Marshall Plan financed Western European recovery, while the IMF, World Bank, and GATT promoted monetary cooperation, reconstruction, and lower trade barriers among noncommunist partners.

  426. Карточка 426

    Вопрос

How did the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution expand the Vietnam War?

    Ответ

It gave President Johnson broad authority to use force without a formal declaration of war. The administration used it to escalate bombing and ground combat in Vietnam.

  427. Карточка 427

    Вопрос

Why did the Bay of Pigs invasion fail?

    Ответ

A CIA-backed exile force couldn't spark the expected uprising against Fidel Castro. The failed 1961 invasion strengthened Castro and embarrassed the Kennedy administration.

  428. Карточка 428

    Вопрос

What produced the postwar baby boom?

    Ответ

Returning veterans, rising incomes, earlier marriage, and births delayed by depression and war helped raise birthrates. The large generation born from 1946 to 1964 expanded demand for schools, housing, consumer goods, and later political attention.

  429. Карточка 429

    Вопрос

Why did the Cold War defense buildup divide Americans?

    Ответ

Advocates argued that nuclear strength discouraged attack, while opponents feared catastrophic war, spiraling costs, and too much influence for defense interests. In his 1961 farewell address, Eisenhower urged citizens to scrutinize the close ties among weapons makers, the armed forces, and policymakers.

  430. Карточка 430

    Вопрос

Why was the Tet Offensive a political turning point?

    Ответ

It widened the credibility gap between official optimism and the war's reality. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces repelled the attacks militarily, but their scale weakened public confidence in victory.

  431. Карточка 431

    Вопрос

What did the Berlin Airlift demonstrate?

    Ответ

The United States and its allies would resist Soviet pressure without starting a direct war. They supplied West Berlin by air until the Soviet Union ended its blockade.

  432. Карточка 432

    Вопрос

How was the Cuban Missile Crisis resolved?

    Ответ

The Soviet Union removed missiles from Cuba after a U.S. naval quarantine and secret bargaining. The United States pledged not to invade Cuba and later removed its missiles from Turkey.

  433. Карточка 433

    Вопрос

What did détente change in Cold War relations?

    Ответ

It eased some tensions through negotiation and strategic balancing. Nixon's opening to China and the SALT I agreements with the Soviet Union supplemented containment without ending superpower rivalry.

  434. Карточка 434

    Вопрос

Why did suburbs grow rapidly after World War II?

    Ответ

VA and FHA mortgage support joined mass home construction, rising incomes, and automobile access to make outward growth easier. Federal credit and highway investment helped move households, businesses, and jobs away from central cities.

  435. Карточка 435

    Вопрос

Why was NATO a major change in U.S. foreign policy?

    Ответ

It made the United States part of a permanent peacetime military alliance. Members treated an attack on one as an attack on all, institutionalizing collective defense against the Soviet bloc.

  436. Карточка 436

    Вопрос

Why did opposition to the Vietnam War grow?

    Ответ

Escalating casualties, the draft, televised violence, and distrust of official claims eroded support. Critics ranged from students and clergy to veterans and members of Congress, with different moral and strategic objections.

  437. Карточка 437

    Вопрос

What made the Montgomery bus boycott effective?

    Ответ

Sustained community organization combined economic pressure with a legal challenge. The boycott elevated Martin Luther King Jr. and ended segregated bus seating after a federal court ruling.

  438. Карточка 438

    Вопрос

How did all three federal branches take early civil rights action?

    Ответ

The president ordered military desegregation, the Supreme Court struck down school segregation, and Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1957. That limited law created federal civil rights offices and new voting-rights enforcement tools, showing progress despite strong resistance.

  439. Карточка 439

    Вопрос

How did housing policy reinforce postwar racial inequality?

    Ответ

Federal underwriting rules, redlining, racial covenants, and private discrimination restricted Black access to favorable mortgages. White families gained far more access to low-down-payment suburban housing and the home equity it produced.

  440. Карточка 440

    Вопрос

    What was Vietnamization?

    Ответ

It shifted ground combat to South Vietnamese forces while U.S. troops withdrew. Nixon paired withdrawal with continued bombing and regional operations, so the policy didn't immediately end the war.

  441. Карточка 441

    Вопрос

What policy shift did NSC-68 recommend?

    Ответ

It called for a large, sustained military buildup to contain communism worldwide. The Korean War helped turn that recommendation into sharply higher defense spending.

  442. Карточка 442

    Вопрос

What strategy did the Greensboro sit-ins spread?

    Ответ

Students used nonviolent direct action against segregated public accommodations. The sit-in movement helped create SNCC and shifted more leadership toward young local activists.

  443. Карточка 443

    Вопрос

How did the Interstate Highway Act reshape travel and cities?

    Ответ

It expanded high-speed automobile and truck travel while linking metropolitan areas, suburbs, and national markets. Urban routes also displaced many low-income and Black neighborhoods and shifted transportation investment away from transit-dependent communities.

  444. Карточка 444

    Вопрос

Why did postwar mass culture provoke challenges to conformity?

    Ответ

Television, advertising, suburban ideals, and consumer goods promoted a shared model of success that some Americans found restrictive. Beat writers, rock-and-roll performers and fans, and other young dissenters tested racial, artistic, and social boundaries.

  445. Карточка 445

    Вопрос

How did the Korean War test containment?

    Ответ

U.S.-led UN forces reversed North Korea's invasion but didn't reunify Korea. Chinese intervention pushed the war back toward the original border, and the 1953 armistice left a divided peninsula.

  446. Карточка 446

    Вопрос

What constitutional principle did Brown v. Board of Education establish?

    Ответ

State-mandated segregation in public schools violated equal protection. The Court rejected the idea that separate schools could be equal, overturning a central legal support of Jim Crow education.

  447. Карточка 447

    Вопрос

What constitutional concern did the War Powers Resolution address?

    Ответ

It tried to restore Congress's role in decisions that send U.S. forces into hostilities. Passed over Nixon's veto, it reflected frustration with presidential escalation in Vietnam.
