Choose and conjugate the Spanish preterite or imperfect in 160 original context questions, paired contrasts, and four short stories for A2–B1 practice.

These preterite vs imperfect flashcards give English-speaking A2–B1 learners 160 original prompts for choosing and conjugating a Spanish past tense in context. Each answer supplies the verb form first, completes the sentence, and explains the choice in plain English.
What the cards practice
- Context → exact Spanish form: use the infinitive, subject, time frame, and surrounding event to produce one preterite or imperfect form.
- Completed event ↔ past background: compare 60 matched semantic pairs built around the same verb, with one bounded or completed reading and one habitual, descriptive, or in-progress reading.
- Narrative sequencing: finish 24 prompts across four short stories, separating scene-setting imperfect forms from preterite events that move the story forward.
The deck deliberately leaves out bare English-to-Spanish translation, Spanish-to-English recall, exhaustive paradigms, voseo, compound pasts, subjunctive forms, copied textbook or test questions, and prompts that support multiple answers within the stated context. Those directions would test a different skill or make the expected answer unclear.
The sequence starts with 16 form-and-use foundations. The first half of each matched pair appears before its counterpart, with 59 unrelated cards between the two. A deterministic hash-balanced sequence puts 30 preterite and 30 imperfect answers in each half without a short repeating pattern. Related uses of the same verb are also separated by at least three unrelated cards. The final 24 cards interleave four short stories, leaving three unrelated cards between successive prompts from the same story.
Forms were checked against RAE–ASALE conjugation guidance. Uses and A2–B1 scope were checked against the Instituto Cervantes grammar inventories for A1–A2 and B1–B2. No source prose, learner-deck text, textbook material, or test question was copied.
An AI tool helped draft and sequence the cards and generated the cover. Every final front and back was manually checked for natural Spanish, one clearly supported answer in the stated context, and alignment with the cited guidance. This is an independent, unofficial learning resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the RAE, ASALE, or Instituto Cervantes. The original questions, answers, selection, sequence, metadata, and cover are shared under CC0 1.0 to the extent those elements can be dedicated; the underlying language facts remain common knowledge.
