English Irregular Verb Flashcards: Past Tense & Past Participle

Practice common English irregular verbs from base form to past simple and past participle, with concise examples and clearly marked UK/US variants.

About this deck

Practice 70 common English irregular verbs through 203 short retrieval prompts.

What this deck practices

  • Base form → past simple: all 70 verbs.
  • Base form → past participle: all 70 verbs.
  • Distinctive past form → base form: 63 reverse prompts.
  • Current variants: concise UK/US notes for forms such as got/gotten, learned/learnt, and spelled/spelt.

The order starts with high-utility verbs such as be, have, do, and go, then moves through everyday actions, communication, change, movement, and daily routines. A fixed sequence mixes all three prompt directions, introduces each verb before asking for reverse recall, and leaves at least four unrelated cards between prompts for the same verb.

This compact set prioritizes frequent, current learner vocabulary. It excludes rare and archaic forms, copied reference tables, and pronunciation drills beyond the easily confused past form of read. Reverse prompts are omitted for unchanged written forms—put, read, cut, set, hit, and let—and for found, which is also a present-tense base verb. Past-simple → past-participle permutations are also excluded because anchoring each form to the base verb is more useful in everyday study.

Selection follows the Oxford 3000 frequency-and-usefulness method. Forms were checked against the British Council irregular-verbs reference and Cambridge Dictionary's irregular-verb table, with current dictionary entries used for regional variants. All prompts, examples, ordering, and metadata are original. No source or competitor table, prose, exercise, or example was copied.
