# Ham Radio Technician Flashcards in 2026: Study the New Question Pool

If a Technician study guide still says `2022–2026`, its question pool expired on June 30, 2026. A polished book, app, or deck can drill those questions perfectly and still prepare you for a retired exam. Every U.S. Technician Element 2 exam given since July 1, 2026, uses the 2026–2030 pool.

## Use the 2026–2030 Technician question pool

The current pool is the **2026–2030 Technician Class (Element 2) Question Pool**, effective from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030. NCVEC first released it in December 2025, then issued errata on February 19, 2026. The corrected release modifies four questions. The pool page also provides a separate file with three diagrams.

Use the February 19 PDF or DOCX, not the original December file or an older local copy. NCVEC identifies the pool as public domain. Bookmark the page and check it again before your exam in case the committee publishes more errata.

ARRL reports that the new pool contains **409 questions**: 27 were added, 30 removed, and about 155 modified compared with the previous pool. It also says 2022-series Technician exams were valid only through June 30, 2026. An old deck can omit new material and preserve wording that no longer matches the current pool. ## Know the 409-question pool and the 35-question exam

You will not receive all 409 pool questions on exam day. Technician Element 2 is a **35-question multiple-choice exam** covering regulations, operating practices, and electronics theory. The current [FCC rule in 47 CFR 97.503](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/part-97/section-97.503) sets the passing score at **26 correct answers out of 35**.

The official syllabus divides the pool into 35 groups and assigns one exam question to each group. That produces this distribution:

The counts add up to 35. Six rules questions matter, but the blueprint does not let you escape technical concepts, equipment, signals, or safety. A practice service that simply picks any 35 of the 409 questions would not reproduce this structure.

## Map the pool before making cards

Keep the official subelement and group codes while you study. A simple deck structure can use tags such as `T1-rules`, `T5-electrical`, `T7-circuits`, and `T0-safety`. Add the exact group code when you want more detail.

This makes a weak-topic result actionable. If practice exams repeatedly expose problems in T5D, you can review Ohm's law and series or parallel circuits instead of vaguely deciding to “study electricity again.”

Do not turn all 409 questions into cards on the first evening. Read one section from a current study guide or class, check the matching official pool group, then add the facts and relationships that still require retrieval practice. A smaller deck you understand is easier to maintain than a complete copy you barely read.

## Build concept cards, not answer-key cards

The public pool shows every multiple-choice question and its keyed answer. That makes it tempting to put the entire question on the front of a card and the correct letter on the back. You soon recognize the wording without being able to explain the rule or calculation.

Use three layers:

1. Learn the concept from a current manual, course, instructor, or other reliable explanation.
2. Make a small card that asks you to retrieve the rule, relationship, procedure, or meaning without answer choices.
3. Check the concept inside randomized questions from the current pool.

Keep one clear target per card. Put the direct answer first, followed by a short explanation or calculation. Split a card when its back starts testing several unrelated facts. For schematic symbols and the three official diagrams, make image cards from the public-domain NCVEC files. Crop a symbol or hide one label when the card tests a single feature. Keep returning to the complete diagrams too; a crop will not teach you to trace a connection through the full figure.

## Stop memorizing answer letters

An answer such as “C” carries no radio knowledge. It also fails as soon as a practice system changes the order of the choices.

Recall the answer in words before revealing the choices. For a calculation, write the formula, substitute the values, and include the units. For a rule, explain the operating consequence. For a troubleshooting item, describe what the symptom proves and what it does not.

You may still recognize official wording after enough practice. That is unavoidable with a public pool. The extra explanation is what makes the memory useful after the test, when a real antenna, repeater, battery, or band edge does not arrive with four labeled options.

## Follow a practical study workflow

This loop keeps the deck tied to the current source and keeps practice exams separate.

1. **Confirm the valid pool.** Save the corrected NCVEC release and its three diagrams. Remove old pool files from your active study folder.
2. **Take a baseline practice exam.** Use a randomized exam built from the current pool and its 35-group blueprint. Record missed or guessed question IDs when available, along with weak subelements. Keep the score outside your FSRS deck; one result is not a forecast.
3. **Learn one weak group.** Read the explanation behind the questions. Work calculations on paper and say operating procedures aloud.
4. **Make a few recall cards.** Capture definitions, rules, formulas, distinctions, diagram features, and the reason behind each miss. Link or note the official group code for later checking.
5. **Review due cards honestly.** Reveal the back only after producing an answer. A familiar answer after the reveal still counts as a failed retrieval.
6. **Return to randomized questions.** Check whether you can apply the concept when the wording and distractors change. Record the exam result separately instead of rating the whole attempt as an FSRS review.
7. **Repeat across the blueprint.** Give extra time to weak groups while continuing mixed exams that sample all ten subelements.

A current-pool practice exam checks readiness across the 35-group structure. Your deck holds the smaller pieces that need more work.

After each practice exam, classify every wrong response and every correct answer you guessed:

- **Knowledge gap:** you did not know a term, limit, or rule. Make one direct recall card.
- **Concept gap:** you remembered words but could not explain the relationship. Relearn it, then make a why or how card.
- **Calculation gap:** you chose the wrong formula, conversion, or unit. Work a fresh example before adding a compact formula card.
- **Diagram gap:** you could not read a symbol or trace a connection. Practice with the official diagrams.
- **Reading error:** you missed words such as `not`, `except`, `maximum`, or `minimum`. Slow down on practice exams; another fact card may not help.
