# Gizmo Alternative (2026): Gizmo vs Flashcards

Gizmo can build an AI Tutor lesson from a lecture you record in the app, make cards from a PowerPoint, and wrap review in XP, levels, leagues, and streaks. Flashcards is much plainer: create a smaller set of checked front/back cards, then let FSRS-6 schedule them. That is the main tradeoff for anyone searching for a **Gizmo alternative**.

If you want Gizmo's playful AI-first study environment, Flashcards is not a direct replacement. If you want more control over what the AI saves, documented FSRS-6 scheduling, and card edits and reviews that write locally before syncing, Flashcards may fit better.

## The short answer

- Choose **Gizmo** if you want broad source imports, automatic card creation, AI Tutor lessons and quizzes, and a game-like review loop. Its lesson-import path also accepts YouTube videos and existing Gizmo decks.
- Choose **Flashcards** if you want a focused front/back collection, a conversational AI workflow where you can inspect card content before asking it to save, documented FSRS-6 scheduling, and offline-first card and review writes.
- Consider **both** if Gizmo helps you explore a large source and Flashcards holds the smaller set of facts you have checked and want to remember for the long term.

Using both is a manual workflow. Gizmo currently says card and deck export is unavailable, and Flashcards does not have a Gizmo importer. There is no automatic or lossless migration path between them.

The products overlap at “AI can help make flashcards.” The workflows on either side of that sentence are quite different.

## Gizmo starts with automatic conversion

Gizmo's quickest route to new cards is Magic Import. Its [official Magic Import guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15647624-what-is-magic-import) lists PDFs, an in-app lecture recording, pasted notes, photos, PowerPoint files, Quizlet, Anki, spreadsheets, and websites as source options. Gizmo processes the material, automatically creates cards, and highlights in green the words it will test in Memorise.

That breadth is useful when the source is the problem. A student can begin with a slide deck or lecture instead of first converting it into a supported text or image format. Gizmo's own advice is still to review the imported deck. Automatic conversion saves setup time; it does not establish that every generated card is accurate or worth learning.

The separate AI Tutor lesson-import path covers PDF, PowerPoint, YouTube, notes, photos, a recorded lecture, Quizlet, and an existing Gizmo deck, according to the [official lesson import guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15935404-how-do-i-use-magic-import-to-start-an-ai-tutor-lesson). YouTube and existing Gizmo decks are documented there as lesson inputs, not in the Magic Import list for automatically creating cards above.

Flashcards does not offer a native Magic Import equivalent for that full source list. It cannot take PowerPoint, audio, video, a YouTube URL, a website URL, or an Anki package as a first-class import source. If your routine begins with PowerPoint, recording a lecture, a YouTube lesson, a website, or an Anki deck—the corresponding Gizmo paths documented above—Gizmo removes more preparation work.

## AI Tutor is broader than card drafting

Gizmo's AI Tutor is a study surface of its own. According to the [AI Tutor documentation](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/13011417-how-does-the-ai-tutor-work), you can start it from Home or from a deck. It can begin a Course and generate flashcards, Notes, Lessons, and AI-generated quizzes.

That makes Gizmo useful when you do not yet know how to break a topic into study activities. You can ask for an explanation, move through a lesson, generate cards, and use a quiz without leaving the product's Tutor workflow.

The free plan had two relevant limits on the facts-checked date. Magic Import required a 20-minute wait between imports, as documented in the [Magic Import guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15647624-what-is-magic-import), and Gizmo documented [five free AI Tutor sessions per day](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15869958-how-many-ai-tutor-sessions-can-i-have-for-free). Gizmo Unlimited removes that Tutor cap. These are usage boundaries, not prices; plan details can change, so check the official pages before choosing around a specific limit.

Flashcards AI chat does not provide Gizmo-style Courses, Notes, Lessons, or a native generated quiz mode. Its job is narrower: help inspect and maintain a card workspace.

## What controlled AI card creation means in Flashcards

Flashcards AI chat accepts these attachment groups:

- PDF;
- TXT, LOG, and SQL;
- CSV, JSON, XML, Markdown, and HTML;
- Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and YAML;
- XLS and XLSX spreadsheets;
- DOCX documents; and
- GIF, JPEG, PNG, and WebP images.

Each attachment can be up to 3 MB, and the entire AI run request can be up to 5 MB. AI chat requires a network connection.

The chat is aware of the current workspace. Through a constrained SQL tool, it can inspect cards, decks, and review events, then create, update, or delete cards. Before proposing or writing new cards, it checks for similar material and discusses possible duplicates. It also describes the exact changes it plans to make.

Permission stays conversational. After announcing the exact changes, the assistant can execute a specific, low-risk request such as “Create these three cards in my Biology deck.” A broad or unclear write requires confirmation.

There is no separate staged draft-approval screen. If you want tighter control, ask for candidate cards or a plan first. Read the proposed fronts, backs, and tags in chat, request changes, then explicitly ask the AI to save them. New AI-proposed cards require tags. The front should be a question or recall prompt that does not reveal the answer; the back starts with the direct answer and can add Markdown or examples when they help.

After saving, you can inspect, edit, or delete cards in the Cards screen before reviewing them. You can also create every card manually without AI. The workflow adds judgment on purpose: AI helps with the first pass, while the learner decides what enters the review queue. ## The review loops are not interchangeable

Gizmo's [overview of how the product works](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/14472668-how-does-gizmo-work) connects Magic Import, Memorise, AI Tutor, and its progression system. In Memorise, Gizmo tests the words highlighted in green. Its [highlighting guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/13166301-how-does-highlighting-work) explains that those words are blanked and tested progressively, using multiple-choice or a typed answer.

Gizmo also applies spaced repetition. Its [spaced-repetition explanation](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15647638-what-is-spaced-repetition) says correct answers return later and incorrect answers return sooner, with the timing configured automatically. The official documentation reviewed for this article does not call Gizmo's scheduler FSRS. That is a documentation limit, not evidence for or against any private implementation.

Flashcards uses a simpler recall loop. A due or new card shows its front first. You reveal the back, judge your recall, and choose Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. Each button previews the next interval. You can edit a card during a Flashcards review. After revealing the answer, you can also hand that card into AI chat for a more involved rewrite or discussion. Gizmo lets you edit the front, back, photos, lists, and multiple-choice options outside a quiz, but its [card management guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/13761411-how-do-i-edit-or-manage-my-cards) says a card can only be deleted, not edited, during Memorise.

Flashcards does not generate native multiple-choice questions or grade typed answers. It does not provide a Gizmo-style AI quiz or Tutor lesson either. [Flashcards and practice tests train different skills](/blog/flashcards-vs-practice-tests/), and people preparing for an exam may reasonably want both recall cards and varied practice.

## Gizmo's playful layer is a real product difference

Gizmo is built to make study feel like a game. Its product overview documents XP, levels, leagues, and streaks. In Memorise, each wrong answer costs a Heart; running out pauses quizzing until Hearts refill. [Hints](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15504721-what-are-hints) can reveal the first letter or remove a wrong multiple-choice option, and users can buy them with coins earned from quizzing. The exact free and Unlimited boundaries can change, so the [Hearts documentation](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15623061-what-are-hearts) is the right place to check current rules.

Gizmo Live goes further. Its [official Live guide](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/15945296-what-happens-during-a-gizmo-live-game) describes timed multiplayer rounds, XP, a leaderboard, bets, and answer review. That can make a classroom or study group feel quite different from a solitary flashcard queue.

Flashcards has no native live multiplayer, Hearts, Hints, XP, coins, levels, leagues, streaks, betting, or equivalent game system. It also does not replace Gizmo's community and shared-study features. If those mechanics help you return every day, moving to Flashcards removes them rather than recreating them.

## Offline-first has a precise boundary

The official Gizmo web and help pages reviewed for this article do not document an offline-first local-write guarantee. That statement should not be stretched into “Gizmo cannot work offline.” It only means the reviewed documentation does not promise the same storage and sync behavior that Flashcards documents.

Flashcards writes cards, edits, and reviews locally. The web app uses IndexedDB; the mobile apps use SQLite. Changes enter an outbox and sync after the connection returns. You can create a manual card, fix an existing one, or finish due reviews while disconnected.

AI is the boundary. Flashcards AI chat and generation need the network, even though the saved card collection and review workflow do not. ## Migration is manual and incomplete

Gizmo's card management documentation says [card and deck export is currently unavailable](https://help.gizmo.ai/en/articles/13761411-how-do-i-edit-or-manage-my-cards). That rules out a normal file-export-and-import route into Flashcards.

Flashcards' own workspace ZIP is not a complete account backup. It can transfer cards, tags, and related media between Flashcards workspaces. It does not carry review history, FSRS state, workspace settings, full deck structures, or account data.

Together, those limits mean there is no automatic or lossless Gizmo-to-Flashcards migration. If you decide to move, start with a small set and recreate only the cards that are still useful. Keep access to the original sources, check each front and back, add tags, and expect Gizmo progress, Tutor context, highlights, game state, and scheduling history to stay behind.

## Where Flashcards is not a direct Gizmo replacement

Flashcards does not replace Gizmo's:

- native PowerPoint, lecture-recording, YouTube lesson-import, website, Quizlet, or Anki paths;
- automatic highlighting and progressive blanking in Memorise;
- multiple-choice and typed-answer review;
- AI Tutor Courses, Notes, Lessons, and generated quizzes;
- Hearts and Hints;
- XP, coins, levels, leagues, and streaks;
- Gizmo Live multiplayer games, leaderboards, bets, and timed rounds; or
- community and shared-study features.

Those are current product boundaries. Flashcards' MIT-licensed source and AWS CDK self-hosting path offer a different kind of control, but open code does not compensate for a missing study mode if that mode is what keeps you learning.

## Which Gizmo alternative fits your study workflow?

Choose Gizmo when you want the shortest route from varied source material to something interactive. Its native inputs cover more student material, AI Tutor can teach around the deck, and Memorise combines automatic highlights with progressively harder testing. The game and social layers are also meaningful if rewards, competition, or group play help your habit.

Choose Flashcards when you already know that the durable object should be a front/back card. Its AI can inspect the workspace, check for duplicates, show exact planned changes, and save after the appropriate conversational permission. You can then inspect or edit the result and review it with documented FSRS-6. Card work continues offline; AI work waits for a connection.

Using both can make sense. Gizmo can help unpack a lecture or presentation and test the topic in several ways. Flashcards can hold a smaller collection of verified prompts for continued recall. Do not copy everything automatically. A short deck of precise cards is usually more useful than a large deck of unchecked AI output.

The practical **Gizmo alternative** answer comes down to what you want around the card. Stay with Gizmo for Magic Import, AI Tutor, varied testing, and playful motivation. Consider Flashcards for controlled card creation, transparent FSRS-6, and offline-first local review writes.
