# Flashcard Lab App Review (2026): Google Sheets, Spaced Repetition, and Alternatives

Flashcard Lab starts with a familiar table: prompts in the first column, answers in the second, and headers in the first row. Instead of importing that table into a separate deck editor, you select the Google Sheet and study it through Flashcard Lab. For people who already build lessons or vocabulary lists in Sheets, that is a meaningful difference.

This **Flashcard Lab app review** is based on the product website, current Android and iPhone listings, the Chrome Web Store, Google Workspace Marketplace, and the vendor's privacy policy. It is not a hands-on test. The official sources describe the authoring, capture, printing, and review surfaces well, but leave some important product behavior undocumented.

## The short answer

- Choose **Flashcard Lab** when Google Sheets is where you want to create and maintain cards. Browser capture, bulk spreadsheet editing, mobile review, and Google Docs printing form a practical workflow.
- Choose **Flashcards Open Source App** when you want explicit front/back cards in a non-Google workspace, documented FSRS-6, offline-first writes, open-source code, and a supported self-hosting path. It does not have live Google Sheets integration.
- Choose **Anki** when you need mature desktop clients, advanced note types and templates, add-ons, established collection packages, or deeper FSRS controls.

There is no automatic winner. The deciding question is where the authoritative copy of your study material should live: a Google Sheet, a dedicated open workspace, or a mature local collection.

The table is intentionally about workflow, not feature totals. Flashcard Lab lets the spreadsheet stay useful as an ordinary spreadsheet. Flashcards and Anki store a richer learning state inside the study system, at the cost of leaving the Sheet-centered model.

## The Google Sheet stays at the center

The current [Android listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tidisventures.flashcardlabmobile) gives a simple starting schema: headers in row one, prompts in column one, and answers in column two. It calls columns three and four optional answer and prompt subtext. The [iPhone listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flashcard-lab/id6469375646) describes those optional columns as synonyms and mnemonics. Treat the first two columns as the clear common core, and check the current template before depending on optional columns across surfaces.

That structure is the appeal of **Google Sheets flashcards**. A teacher can fix a repeated term with fill tools, prepare a class list with a colleague, and keep the rows readable outside the review app. A learner can sort vocabulary, clean pasted material, or use formulas before studying it.

Flashcard Lab adds several ways to use those rows:

- The [product website](https://flashcardlab.co/) advertises browser review, randomized cards, reverse answer/prompt mode, images, custom colors, simple spaced repetition, PDF-to-card AI, and printable cards through Google Docs.
- The [Chrome extension](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/flashcard-lab/fomgbfkcdcnconmkcppfhakhoagmndkp) can save selected webpage text to a chosen Google Sheet, retrieve a Dictionary.com definition, and run several review modes in the extension.
- The Google Sheets add-on handles images, audio links, review, AI card generation from PDFs, and printable Google Docs output.
- The Android and iPhone apps let users select Google Sheets and review on a phone. Both store listings showed releases from May 2026 when checked.

The result is a coherent loop: collect while browsing, edit in Sheets, review in the browser or mobile app, and print when a physical set is useful. Exact refresh timing and synchronization rules between those surfaces are not publicly documented, so “Sheet-centered” is safer than promising real-time, conflict-free sync.

Notion is no longer part of that loop. The mobile version histories say the integration was sunset in 2024. Older screenshots that present Notion as a current source are out of date.

## Where Flashcard Lab earns its place

### Bulk editing without a recurring import

Many flashcard apps can import CSV or tab-separated text. After import, however, the spreadsheet and the deck become separate copies. Flashcard Lab is built around reviewing a selected Sheet, which suits material maintained through pasted lists, formulas, shared editing, or frequent bulk changes.

This also gives the card text a straightforward exit path. Prompts and answers remain readable as rows if you stop using Flashcard Lab. That is useful portability, though it does not cover every part of the learning state.

### Browser capture for small facts and vocabulary

The Chrome extension saves selected text through the context menu and can retrieve a definition. Its listing says adding words, text, and definitions is free, while unlimited review inside the extension requires premium functionality.

Capture is not verification. An automatically retrieved definition can be wrong for the sentence, too broad, or simply too long for a useful card. The fast workflow is valuable when you review the resulting rows before learning them.

### Printing without rebuilding the cards

Google Docs printing is a practical advantage for teachers, classroom stations, physical sorting, and learners who cannot use a device during a session. Flashcard Lab turns the Sheet into printable cards instead of requiring screenshots or a second layout tool.

If Sheets-to-Docs printing is a core requirement, Flashcard Lab is the clear fit here. Flashcards Open Source App has no equivalent workflow, and printing is not the reason most people choose Anki.

## Spaced repetition is present, but the formula is not public

Flashcard Lab advertises a spaced repetition study mode. Its official listings also describe randomization, reverse cards, forgotten-word retesting, and results or progress views. These are real review features, but they do not identify the scheduler.

The sources checked do not name FSRS, SM-2, or another algorithm. They do not publish the interval formula, show how each response changes a due date, or say whether review history is stored in the Google Sheet. A responsible **Flashcard Lab review** cannot fill those gaps by inference.

Flashcards publishes a different contract. Its [FSRS-6 documentation](https://github.com/kirill-markin/flashcards-open-source-app/blob/main/docs/fsrs-scheduling-logic.md) describes the ratings, stored state, defaults, and current limits. It uses the official default weights rather than optimizing personal weights from each learner's history.

Anki goes further for people who want to tune the system. Its [FSRS settings](https://docs.ankiweb.net/deck-options.html#fsrs) include desired retention, parameter optimization, presets, and simulation tools. That makes Anki the mature scheduler choice, not an automatic winner for someone who mainly wants to review a Sheet without much setup.

## Mobile apps do not answer the offline question

Flashcard Lab currently has Android and iPhone listings alongside its browser, add-on, and extension surfaces. Google Play showed an update on May 6, 2026. Apple's US listing showed version 2.7.1 released May 5, 2026 and labeled the app “Only for iPhone.”

What the public pages do not provide is a complete offline contract. I found no official promise covering cold starts, a fully local collection, offline editing, queued review events, or conflict handling after reconnection. The sources also do not explain exactly when a mobile review affects the Sheet or where its progress state is stored.

This is an unknown, not proof that offline use fails. Still, someone planning to study on flights or with unreliable internet should not depend on behavior the vendor has not documented.

Flashcards documents [offline-first local writes](https://github.com/kirill-markin/flashcards-open-source-app/blob/main/docs/architecture.md#offline-first-sync) for cards, edits, and reviews on web and mobile, followed by sync after reconnection. Initial authentication and workspace hydration still need a connection; AI and uncached media also have online limits. Anki's installed clients keep their working collections locally. ## Flashcard Lab pricing depends on the surface

There is no single public **Flashcard Lab pricing** table that safely covers the add-on, extension, Android app, iPhone app, and browser experience.

The [Workspace Marketplace listing](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/flashcard_lab/934660656831) says “Free of charge with paid features.” It identifies unlimited review, images, printing, and AI capabilities as premium, then directs users to the add-on's upgrade menu for the current price.

Google Play says the add-on is free and premium add-on features require a one-time payment for lifetime access, but it does not publish that amount. The Android app is marked as containing ads and in-app purchases.

On August 12, 2026, the US iPhone listing showed the app as free with these purchases:

- **Flashcard Lab Pro:** US$17.99
- **Flashcard Lab Elite:** US$19.99

The public listing does not explain the duration or cross-surface entitlement well enough to map either purchase to the add-on's lifetime-access wording. Check the upgrade screen on the surface you plan to use; do not assume an iPhone purchase unlocks Google Sheets, Android, Chrome, or browser features.

For comparison, Flashcards' [hosted core is free during beta](/pricing/). Its MIT-licensed software can be self-hosted, but AWS infrastructure, email, monitoring, AI providers, backups, and maintenance still cost money or time. Anki's desktop app, AnkiWeb, and AnkiDroid are free; the official US AnkiMobile app was US$24.99 as a one-time purchase when checked.

## Check the Google access and the vendor's privacy claims

The Marketplace permission screen says Flashcard Lab can request access to:

- see, edit, create, and delete all Google Docs documents;
- view and manage spreadsheets where the application is installed;
- display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars;
- see the account's primary email address and basic personal information.

Those permissions are consistent with creating printable Docs and working inside Sheets, but they remain meaningful access. Review them under the account that will hold the study material. School-managed accounts may also require administrator approval.

The vendor's [privacy policy](https://flashcardlab.co/privacy-policy?policy=flashcard-lab), labeled March 1, 2024, says the app reads an email address, column headers, and cell contents. It says the app can write to Sheets after permission is granted and the user triggers the action. The policy also says the remote database stores email addresses, Google Sheet IDs, payment transaction IDs, and payment dates, but not Google Sheet cell contents.

These are vendor statements, not an independent audit. The Marketplace page describes requested Google access; the privacy policy describes how the vendor says it uses and stores data; Apple and Google Play show developer-provided privacy declarations. The policy does not spell out every data flow for PDF-to-card AI. Review sensitive school, client, health, or unpublished research material separately before uploading it.

## A Sheet is portable card content, not a complete backup

The strongest portability claim here is simple: you can still read and copy prompt and answer rows without decoding a proprietary deck file.

The official sources do not establish that review history, spaced repetition state, test results, image behavior, purchases, or every app setting lives in the Sheet. An untouched copy protects the visible card content; it is not automatically a complete Flashcard Lab backup.

There is also no lossless migration to Flashcards Open Source App. Flashcards has no live Google Sheets integration and no Flashcard Lab importer. A CSV, spreadsheet export, or attached spreadsheet can be source material for AI-assisted drafting, but the draft needs review and begins with new FSRS state. Attaching a spreadsheet is not the same as keeping cards backed by a live Sheet.

Anki has a more conventional route because it can [import delimited text into note fields](https://docs.ankiweb.net/importing/text-files.html). You still need to map columns, decide what to do with optional subtext, verify media, and expect new scheduling unless a supported format explicitly carries history. A Google Sheet is not an Anki collection package.

Before moving a large Sheet:

1. Duplicate it and leave the copy unchanged.
2. Record headers, formulas, row count, media links, and optional supporting columns.
3. Test representative rows with multiline text, Unicode, blanks, formulas, images, and links.
4. Compare the resulting fronts, backs, and supporting text before scaling up.
5. Assume review history and scheduling state stay behind unless both products document a transfer path.

Flashcards' own `flashcards.zip` export has a similar boundary: it moves active cards, tags, and referenced media, not review history, FSRS state, workspace settings, full deck structure, or account data. Open source does not turn a content export into a complete backup.

## Which workflow should you choose?

### Choose Flashcard Lab for a spreadsheet-centered loop

Flashcard Lab fits when Google Sheets is already the working home for the material and bulk editing, collaboration, browser capture, or Google Docs printing saves real time. The browser and mobile review surfaces add convenience without asking you to rebuild the content in a conventional deck editor.

Accept the tradeoffs before committing: meaningful Google permissions, a scheduler without a published formula, unclear complete offline behavior, undocumented exact cross-surface sync rules, and pricing that must be checked on the surface you intend to use.

### Choose Flashcards for an open, non-Google workspace

Flashcards is the stronger **Flashcard Lab alternative** when the goal is to move the source of truth out of Google Sheets. It provides dedicated front/back cards, documented FSRS-6, offline-first writes across web and mobile, agent access, MIT-licensed code, and a supported whole-stack deployment.

It is not a shortcut for the existing Sheet workflow. There is no live Sheets sync, direct Flashcard Lab importer, native desktop client, or lossless scheduling migration. ### Choose Anki for mature local power

In a **Flashcard Lab vs Anki** decision, choose Anki when local desktop collections, card templates, cloze and generated card types, add-ons, established packages, direct text import, and mature FSRS controls justify more setup.

Anki turns spreadsheet rows into imported note fields; it does not keep the Sheet as the everyday authoring surface. That extra step is frustrating when Sheets is central and sensible when the destination must support a complex collection for years.

## Final verdict

Flashcard Lab has a clear job: turn Google Sheet rows into reviewable and printable cards while leaving the spreadsheet at the center of authoring. Browser capture, bulk editing, mobile review, PDF-to-card AI, and Google Docs printing make it especially relevant to spreadsheet-native learners and teachers.

The limits are equally clear. “Simple spaced repetition” does not disclose the algorithm. Mobile listings do not establish complete offline behavior. A readable Sheet does not prove that review history is portable. Public prices on one surface do not establish a universal entitlement.

Choose Flashcard Lab for the complete Google Sheets workflow. Choose Flashcards for a dedicated open workspace with documented FSRS-6 and offline-first writes. Choose Anki for mature local control and power-user depth. The best choice is the one that puts the source of truth where you actually want to maintain it.
